Natural puppy laxative?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Does anyone know a good homemade puppy laxative? I'm suspecting clay cat litter, 100% clay not the type that expands. He is still passing some stool and there is some gravel looking pieces in the stool,(looks just like the cat litter)He is running a fever and balks after eating or drinking a little, then rest some and will take more food/water,so far I've offered boiled egg with mayo and bran added, it peaked his interest, greasy hamberger bits, cool water, honey water all these where taken in small amounts, he will seem to feel better then start hurting again, not enough to cry just a look. I give him asparagus next time he is up, I've prayed for him too.

When my parents were visiting last time they were here, their dog got into something he shouldn't and became very constipated. If I remember right, the vet told them mineral oil orally and glycerin suppositories rectally.

I forgot to add, pediatric fleet enemas.

It worries me that your puppy has a fever along with this. I think that you need to see a vet ASAP. Obstruction of the bowel, such as clay,is much harder to shift and remove from the intestines than an impaction of feces. Mild cases of constipation (this sounds beyond mild to me) may be treated by adding Metamucil to the food, 2 tsp. per 10 lb body weight up to a maximum of 6 teaspoons. This is similar to the treatment used for sand colic in horses. You will need to get a quantity of water into the system for it to work however. Check the skin for dehydration (take a good pinch of skin up between finger and thumb. It should relax quickly to a normal position. If it remains tented, the animal is dehydrated, futher complicating matters, and the dry Metamucil may add to the problem.)

My Dog Repair Book says not to pour mineral oil down your dog's mouth, as they cannot taste it and instead of swallowing it, may inhale into the lungs instead. In addition, they recommend the pediatric Fleet mentioned above, but for puppies caution not to use without a veterinarian's recommendation.

I would take the dog to the vet before it gets worse. An puppy that won't eat or drink is a sick little dog. Poor puppy.

With a complete obstruction he pup wouldnt eat or drink anything , or if it did it would vomit it up .I think there is a possible obstruction but not complete its moving .The problem is it can kill the intestines .Whats the temp ? He need antibiotics , an enema , and at least a call to the vet .If you can not afford it explain it to him and have him give doses over the phone .You also want to get the fever down .See if he would take payments ?

Puppy is much better today, he "worked" me heeler style, across the living room this morning and has a good appetite. For the life of me last night I could not remember what kind of oil is used for laxative, next time it's needed I'll mix it with hamberger.Thank you for the reminder Maylene.

I've gone to the store this morning and stocked up, also got some slippery elm powder to sooth his gut for the next few days.

The fever never got high enough to be dangerous, if not for experience I would not have known it was high, the scary part was the backing up from the food/water if I had not seen the look of discomfort in his eyes, I would have thought he was just full.

I belive the honey water and recognizing there was a problem early made the difference.(it pays to pray) Thank you all.

He's a Blue Heeler almost 8 weeks old,we have 2, the other'Shadow' has a personality more like a border collie, this one 'Jacob' is a classic Blue Heeler attitude.

I'm glad your puppy is better. I have a beautiful calico cat named Lacey who will have been with me 18 years on april fools day. When she gets sick the whole household stops until she gets better. The vet calls her the energizer bunny kitty because she just keeps on going and going. My boss already knows that when she finally passes away I'll be taking at least 2 days off work.

Also, I had the same problem of a dog eating kitty poop. I simply put the litter box up high where the cat could get to it, but not the dog.
