Young goats horns flaking off

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We are incountering something new to us. Some of our young goats are flaking off on the horns. It is like layers of the horn at the tip are coming off and one has pieces 3/4 of an inch or so flaking away. These goats are from 3 months of age and younger. My first thought is a mineral difency of some sort.We are in Galveston County TX and dont have problems that I know of with mineral defency.

We have a mineral block out(just a general livestock block)for them to lick and it is bewing used by all.. young and old alike.

Thanks for the help and God Bless.

We raise Angora goats and have experienced this also, but only with kids 5 months old or younger. I've been told it is not a problem, it is caused because of the fast growth of horns at a young age. All the goats that it has happened to are fine after about 6 months old.
