High precision AF in Elan 7?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Is the central focusing point used in the Elan 7 a "high precision" AF point (similar to the AF point used in the EOS 3)? Thanks. Michal

No. The EOS 30/Elan 7 uses the standard AF sensor that works with any lens with an aperture of at least f:5.6. The EOS 3 & 1V need apertures of f:4 or larger (smaller numerically) for the higher precision AF (the cross part) to work. For lenses with smaller apertures (f:4.1 - f:8) the EOS 3 & V reverts to non cross type center AF point.

The EOS 1N needed f:2.8 for this.

The Elan 7 and 7e do have a cross sensor: http://www.usa.canon.com/camcambin/cameras/35mm/slr/elan7_demo/eye_con trol.txt

In fact all the Elans (Elan, ElanII and 7) have a cross sensor as their center focus point. It's not a "high precision" sensor though. The center cross focus point on the 1n for example is 3 times as accurate, but only works with lenses f2.8 and faster. The Elan sensors are low precision cross, which work with lenses f5.6 and faster.

This was the topic of some recent heated discussion on the EOS Mailing List.

The "high precision" sensor in the EOS 1v and EOS 3 will not work neither as a vertical sensor nor at high precision with lenses slower than f/4 down to the AF limit at f/8.

The Elan 7E cross sensor is "Normal precision". It will work on horizontal as well as vertical detail with lenses f/5.6 or faster. In addition, the Elan 7E camera is specified to focus and keep track of moving objects as well as the EOS 1v and EOS 3.
