Ziadie breathes big sigh of relief By Mike Welsch

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Ralph Ziadie and his amazing 8-year-old gelding Sir Bear were both feeling a lot better 48 hours after combining to register a thrilling and heartwarming victory in Saturday's Gulfstream Park Handicap than they were in the days leading up to the Grade 1 event.

An angst-ridden Ziadie had contemplated scratching Sir Bear after his star tied up and went off his feed following a routine work.

Fortunately, Sir Bear recovered from his mysterious malady to register a half-length win over Pleasant Breeze and post his third career Grade 1 victory in the Gulfstream Park Handicap.

"He looks good and at the moment seems to have come out of the race just fine," said Ziadie who was looking a lot more relaxed himself on Monday.

"Hopefully he's over whatever caused his problems. Considering all the troubles he had and the uncertainty over whether he'd run or not, I'd say this was one of my most gratifying wins along with the Met Mile. Knowing in the end that I made the right decision. I'd have probably been second-guessing myself for a long time if he hadn't run well."

Ziadie said Sir Bear's next start may come in defense of his title in Lone Star's Texas Mile on April 28.

Motion excited about Broken Vow

Graham Motion couldn't have been happier with Broken Vow's performance in the Gulfstream Park Handicap even though he finished third as the favorite behind Sir Bear.

"Naturally I was disappointed we didn't win, but I thought he ran a big race considering it was his first time going the distance and against Grade 1 competition," Motion said. "I think he proved he'll be a contender with those horses all year."

Motion is also excited about his multiple-stakes winning filly Sincerely, who worked a half-mile in 47.40 seconds on Sunday and will likely launch her 4-year-old campaign on opening day at Hialeah, Mar. 17, in the Gold Beauty Handicap.

"She was body-sore after the Pennsylvania Oaks and in hindsight it was probably a mistake running her the time before in the Alabama," said Motion.

"I backed off on her a couple of months and she's doing real good now. Her work Sunday was great."

Jerkens gets a lift

Allen Jerkens, on the road to a full recovery after suffering a near fatal attack of pancreatitis in late December, was at the barn bright and early Monday morning. His spirits buoyed by the performance of Shooting Party, a 3-year-old filly who won her career debut impressively the previous afternoon.

"I've always liked this filly," said Jerkens. "I've been waiting to run her for a while, but she was a little nervous and had trouble in the gate. We only recently got her okayed."

Jerkens said it was too early to determine how good Shooting Party might be although her breeding suggests she will go further and should handle the turf.

"The Chief" said he's been feeling much better lately but is still unable to do some of the work he loves so much around the barn.

"This morning was the first time I came out at 6," said the Hall of Famer. "It's hard to get going again, and while I've been back on the pony, I miss not being able to help feed and do some of the other things around the barn.

"With a little luck I hope to be back to normal within a couple of weeks."

Big Bambu suffered heat stroke

Big Bambu, who finished last as the even-money favorite in Sunday's $83,700 Hurricane Bertie Stakes, suffered heat stroke in that race, trainer Alan Sobol said Monday.

Sobol said he felt somewhat relieved to diagnose the heat stroke, because he thought Big Bambu might have broken down when she didn't make the lead.

"It wasn't any fun at all," Sobol said."She had trained so great coming into the race. We traveled so much and she always handled every situation."

Sobol said Big Bambu would stay in south Florida until the end of the month before shipping home to Cleveland. He will point the mare to the $150,000, Grade 2 Genuine Risk Handicap at Belmont on May 12 with a possible prep before that.

* Katherine Harris, Florida's Secretary of State who was a central figure during the disputed presidential election, was booed lustily by the 19,150 at Gulfstream on Sunday as she presented the trophy following the Rampart Handicap. "I've never been booed in my life," Harris told reporters in the winner's circle.

* Awol Honey established a new Gulfstream turf course record when he ran the distance of about five furlongs in 56.70 seconds in Sunday's seventh race. Coyote Willow set the previous record of 57.01 seconds on May 7, 2000. Awol Honey is owned by Ralph Sessa and trained by Bill Cesare. They are also the connections of Heckofaralph who owns the Gulfstream course record for five furlongs (56.25 seconds). Heckofaralph also owns the Calder five-furlong turf course record, 54.80 seconds.

* Jockey Eduardo Nunez took off his remaining two mounts Monday after sustaining a possible concussion when he was dumped by his mount, Kayaking Katy, in the post parade of the second race. Kayaking Katy spooked when she was handed over to the lead pony and threw her head back striking Nunez in the face and hurling him to the track.

* Edgar Prado took off his mounts Monday, suffering from a bout of the flu.

I know I'm going to be sorry I asked but color me curious.....

How does one "boo lustily"?

"How does one 'boo lustily'?"

With vigor and pleasure. This crowd was enjoying their chance to boo the "bad guy". If she'd been close enough they probably would have thrown popcorn at her, too.

so, democrats are gamblers...that figures, but, i'm sure it's not their fault...

They didn't boo lustily, they booed lustfully.

It would not be a surprise if Jeb loses re-election. I said it here first. The dems are going to get out the vote like it has never been gotten out. Watch.

-- FutureShock (gray@matter.think), March 07, 2001.

Of course Slick Willie hired the people to boo; since she turned him down

-- Chicken Little (cluck@cluck.com), March 07, 2001.

I must agree with Mr. Shock on his assessment that: “The dems are going to get out the vote like it has never been gotten out.”

However, after a thorough house cleaning in the form of ‘Voter Role Reform’ the ‘dems’ will find themselves operating with a diminished number of real, registered voters. When the job is done, I predict that the ‘LEGAL’ registered voters remaining on the Democratic Party roles will be less than 68% of the current corruption infested mess. The operative word here is ‘LEGAL’.

The dems are going to get out the vote like it has never been gotten out. Watch.

Whats news about this? Democrats have been doing this in Chicago for years! Why some of the voters are even still alive to tell you who they voted for.

-- Ain't Gonna Happen (Not Here Not@ever.com), March 08, 2001.

Ain't, you don't seem to grasp that an election such as the one we just endured is likely to have far-reaching consequences. Jeb Bush getting dumped by angry Florida voters is just one out of many possibilities - and a fairly minor one at that.

In spite of all the nice guy bipartisan rhetoric from President Bush the Younger, this session of Congress could become a very sorry spectacle indeed. The more the Republicans insist on giving away the store to their corporate masters, the shorter their tenure in office will be.

Oil leases in the Artic Wildlife Refuge, anyone? Hurry! They won't last long at these prices!
