New Challenge Idea: Kinetic Sculpture

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

Instead of producing a functional machine, I'd like to see the teams in Junkyard Wars compete to build a piece of sculpture. There is a time honored tradition of using 'junk' as the medium of fine art. The only restriction to this art challenge would be that the team's sculptures would need to be kinetic--They must move in some way. (Which could include fire spewing, noise making, thumping, hurling, etc.)

As a conclusion to the show, the teams could alternatively dress in tuxedos in a mock art opening setting (In the junkyard, with wine, cheese, etc.)and have their works of art reviewed by a panel of distinguished art critics. Any comments?

We would make our sculpture's kinectic ability to seek and destroy the others team's sculpture...

You just made my heart jump and I'm shaking! I would LOVE to do this more than anything in this world! Duane, Ken and I are competitors with each other in this field. Hummmmmm...... anything could come out of that one.... WOW!

Hmmmmmm ? Dan, you say you'd build your machine to "Destroy" the other guy's machine? Hmmmmmm.... Sounds like a BB's episode to me ? Hmmmmmmm?

Yeah, they should dig a hole and weigh the dirt instead, that's more exciting, watch grass grow.

If we don't make this show..watch for Pharoh's Revenge on BB...(and my bank account take a 2 grand hit! Shit these things are expensive!

June, Duane and Ken...

Gee. Kinetic sculpture. And then maybe race them? Perhaps across sand, over water and up a slippery, slimy slope? Maybe a series of ducks or a hammer head? Or, not get this one...a giant armadillo!

Seriously, it really would be great to see some of the KSR entrants get a chance to show off their skills on this show. Maybe the producers could be talked into showing some footage or a race as a sidebar to the show sometime.

In the mean time, you know and I know that it takes more than 10 hours to do a good, working sculpture.

And for any one out there who didn't understand the weak irony of the first couple of sentences, you really ought to check out the Kinetic Sculpture Race in Norther California each Memorial Day weekend. It is a multi-day endurance race of some of the most innovative kinetic sculptures you have ever seen.

Dan- You built a BB for only $2K? You got off cheap! Biohazard cost it's builder $12K. (But it's a consistant winner.) Mechadon, by far the most visually impresive BB I've ever seen, cost $14K- and lasted all of 30 seconds in the box. Here's hoping you do better than that! We'll be watching!

Yea, but I have a laser cutter, free welding and designers at my disposal...

Robotica Looks MUCH better though...

Yeah, like I said on another JYW thread- I like the challenges presented on Robotica, but Ahmet Zappa would have to go, along with his vapid dog-collared buddies. Good show, bad cast.
