Bee Pollen and Propolis, how much, how often

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My daughter would like to begin taking bee pollen and propolis in hopes of increasing her energy level and giving her immune system a boost. The question is how much/how often? Let me know your experience(s) if any and I'll pass it on. Thanks!

Hi Betsy, I am a beekeeper in Alaska. What I hear the most from the people that take the pollen is to start with a pinch of local pollen a day. Gradually, over a 2-3 wk period, work up to 1/16 tsp a day. It seems to be the general consensus that any more than that seems not to make a difference. I'm assuming once you ingest a grain or so of the plant pollen that is offending, in the case of allergies, that you have it covered. This has also been my personal experience. I would not be without my pollen at allergy season! As far as propolis, I have only made tincture from it to use on cuts, warts, etc. If you would like the recipe for that I can explain how to make it. Hope this helps :) tang

Betsy, don't overlook the value of astragalus root as a premier immune system booster, it has been proven to increase white cells and the all important T cell counts. Knock on wood ( my head will do), I have not caught anything since starting taking it back in November, figured it would be safer and more effective than the flu shot!!! I take two capsules twice a day.

I've been taking bee pollen now for about a year. It has definitely helped me in raising my energy level. Bee pollen has many of the vitamins and minerals we need so it is a good food to take as a supplement. I began by taking a small amount, maybe three grains, to see if I was allergic, and then built up to the tsp a day that I am taking now. I take it with breakfast. My husband can chew it, but I swallow it with juice. Mary

I agree with Tang. Start out with only a few pollen grains and work up slowly. Be sure to use only local pollen to gain the anti-allergy benefit. Too much, too quickly could put your duaghter in the hospital. As an energy booster, it should only be taken in the morning, if she wants to get any sleep.

As for propolis, I've never heard of it being taken internally. The main use I've heard of is in cosmetics.

I have been taking propolis internally off an on for about a year now. I first started with a 20% tincture and now have a 50% tincture which is quite strong. I take a couple of eye dropper drops with a spoonful of honey. No side effects that I can detect and I think it does help in boosting the immune system and preventing colds. I also take bee pollen, one teaspoon in the morning.
