London market slumps to two-year closing low LONDON, March 2 (AFP) - London's stock market slumped to its lowest closing level for more than two years on Friday, as the FTSE 100 index fell 0.85 percent to 5,858.6 points.

Fears of an abrupt end to a decade of uninterrupted US economic growth have hammered all global markets, and London has not escaped the rout -- despite the fact that the British economy remains in reasonable shape in statistical terms.

The FTSE 100 index last closed this low on February 10, 1999. Only once since has it closed below 5,900 points.
