I hope you're okay, Cherri! Don't forget to carefully inspect the foundation and the roof area for cracks when things calm down.

Wow. Quake was so strong it knocked the 'e' right off the end of the city name.

Seems to me I mentioned a dream last week about an earthquake in a "Seattle-looking" city. Better have a talk with my dog. She's been sending me visions and I'm getting damn tired of it.

Hope all is ok, Cherri.

-- Rich (howe9@shentel.net), February 28, 2001.

It was big. Correct on the 6,2 there, like I said a week or two ago we, as a town, have reinforced our buildings and taught people to prepare. people know what to do

-- Cherri (jessam5@home.com), February 28, 2001.

Well, here in Cleveland, were a lil bit behind, just hear on our news it was a 6.2.....DAMN!!!!!!

-- sumer (shh@aol.con), February 28, 2001.

10:55 a.m. pt... was centered 30 miles southwest of Seattle. no danger of a tsunami. downtown office buildings swayed for 20 to 30 seconds, and local television stations immediately were deluged by calls from viewers reporting rolling motion across metro area... MORE...

Geeze I'm still shaking *grin* it takes a lot to get to me and swaying in the second floor of my house is like trying to walk on a moving train. I'm waiting to go get my Daughter from school, her one story building is reinforced with huge "I" beams and her classroom door goes out doors. I expect after shocks of course. I need a drink!

-- Cherri (jessam5@home.com), February 28, 2001.

UB, I can appreciate the urgency of this news, but the 50-point (or whatever) font is a bit much, IMHO.

-- (kb8um8@yahoo.com), February 28, 2001.

Cherri, Sumer has vacated the promo seat at the bar. Sit down and let us take care of you. I'm sure your daughter is fine. I've been reading about the reinforced buildings. Your city planners are doing a great job with enforcing the building codes.

Cherri, I posted that link so fast that I didn't even say.."I hope everyone is alright"..sheepish grin :)

Earthquake strikes Northwest U.S.
Jolt felt in Washington, Oregon
February 28, 2001
Web posted at: 2:17 p.m. EST (1917 GMT)

SEATTLE, Washington (CNN) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 that struck Seattle, Washington, on Wednesday was also felt as far away as Portland, Oregon. Witnesses in Seattle said the ground shook for about 45 seconds. "Everybody just started running ... because we were just scared," a witness told KIRO television in Seattle. The station broadcast pictures of broken windows and people running out of tall buildings. One woman named Cherri Stewart was caught on camera knocking down a 92 year-old quadraplegic while trying to grab bottles of water out of the local grocery store. "It felt like a football field was just rolling and it was back and forth ... but it was freaky," said Cherri. There was only one report of injuries. Cherri Stewart fell, hit her head and knocked out what little sense she had left. The Associated Prass contributed to this report.

My house was built to flex, it appears it did ok, no new cracks since the last earthquake 6 years ago, a 3-4. My cats went flying, literally! Lot more damage south of town, things fell over in homes, down town old brick buildings fell apart, windows broke out. power outages. I can't believe people would drive on it now, it hasn't been reinforced, the only major structure that has not been. It's doing ok right now. I'll take a black jack with a water back.. *grin*

Strong quake hits Pacific Northwest

No injuries reported

February 28, 2001 Web posted at: 2:40 p.m. EST (1940 GMT)

SEATTLE, Washington (CNN) -- A strong earthquake shook the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday, shattering windows in downtown Seattle and rattling Portland, Oregon, for nearly half a minute. There was no immediate word of injuries.

The quake, estimated at a preliminary magnitude of 6.4, hit at approximately 10:55 a.m., according to federal officials at the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska.

Seismologists at the University of Washington said the epicenter of the quake was 11 miles northeast of Olympia, about 30 miles southwest of Seattle.

Dan Williams of Seattle City Light said 17,000 customers were without electricity in the aftermath of the jolt.

The quake was felt as far away as Salt Lake City, Utah.

In downtown Portland, office buildings swayed for 20 to 30 seconds, and local television stations were deluged by calls from viewers reporting rolling motion across the area.

In Seattle, local television stations showed pictures of the collapsed wall of a building and other images showing people standing outside after evacuating buildings. .

The Federal Aviation Administration closed Seattle-Tacoma International Airport following the jolt, saying the facility's control tower had been damaged.

It's up to a 7.0 now.

-- I saw (it on@Drudge.com), February 28, 2001.

The earthquake was 30 miles under the surface, felt more away from the epa center then over it. We are ok. It has been upgraded to a 6.4

Talked to the school- my daughter was at swimming during the earthquake, is back at school now and the school was evacuated as were every school in the city was. Kids are not being sent home because parents are not home. All schools are ok

30 people stuck on top of the space needle. that sucker sways big time in earthquakes. I've had nightmares about being up there during one.

-- Cherri (jessam5@home.com), February 28, 2001.

Cherri, be well and don’t let the ‘aftershocks’ get to you.

Best wishes from ME, Cherri. I've only sat through ONE earthquake, and that was in Indiana. [Yeah...like who ever thought INDIANA had earthquakes.]

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), February 28, 2001.

Now they say it's a 7.4

-- I saw (it on@Drudge.com), February 28, 2001.

We are showing it as a 7.1 magnitude. Now that does rate as a reasonably big one. I'm glad everyone is OK.

-- Malcolm Taylor (taylorm@es.co.nz), February 28, 2001.

Thanks everyone. My kids are all ok, I'm ok. Who was it a week or two ago who predicted an earthquake. I just started getting a few grey hairs the last few years, I think I got a few more today.

They tell us not to expect aftershocks. I remember the one in 1965, the one that got everyone hyped up to secure building and roadways.

Different people are saying different magnitudes, 7.0, 6.5 all in between.

Big breath, seems little or no injuries. The bus system is now free for everyone, so those who don't want to drive. My 10 year old just called *thank you thank you* she was standing next to the pool and said it was a big wave in it. She is scared pretty bad and wants to come home, after lunch though *grin*. "I have a headache and want to come home"! pick me up after lunch!. Ok...... I have never heard her talk so seriously. Now they say it is a 7.0 officially. Damn proud of this city for preparing for the past 36 years, everyone new what to do and followed the instructions pretty well. People evacuated pretty calmly, single file down stairs in major buildings where emergency lights came on, airport traffic has been diverted.

-- Cherri (jessam5@home.com), February 28, 2001.

Rich,

You are one scary dude.

-- Peg (pegmcleod@mediaone.net), February 28, 2001.

damn Malcolm...I'm impressed

-- Uncle Bob (unclb0b@aol.com), February 28, 2001.

From that thread...

Interesting. I had an earthquake dream last night. It's one that I've had a couple times before. Last time I went through it I did everything right and survived without injury. This go around I just couldn't remember what I had done the last time and...awakened just prior to being crushed by a collapsing building. The city that suffered the quake had a "Seattle feel" to it. Think I'll remain on the east coast for a bit longer.

-- Peg (pegmcleod@mediaone.net), February 28, 2001.

Barry

Considering your hatred for blacks, I find it odd that you are so fond of Cherri (being as how she shacks up with a black man). Would you care to explain?

-- (what@is going .on?), February 28, 2001.

Thanks for the Jack, an old staff sergent taught me to drink it when I was stationed in Texas in my early 20's. yep, leave the bottle!

My knees ares till shaking. Glad this 13 year old house was built to safety specs. The older part of town, pioneer square has a lot of brick building that lost bricks, , but the buildings themselves are were retrofitted with those huge steel "I" beams, if you ever visit here you will see them in almost all old buildings, we have done a good job of fitting them into the decorations of buildings, I know my daughters classroom has one going crosswise in it. Ok, is this "the big one" we have been told to expect at any moment?

-- Cherri (jessam5@home.com), February 28, 2001.

Having experienced an earthquake or two, I'm sending calming vibes to Cherri. You feel so damned helpless during the rockin' 'n rollin' and afterwards you definitely have a new respect for the powers of Mother Nature.

Rich - good call with the dream.

-- 1 (2@3.com), February 28, 2001.

"Ok, is this "the big one" we have been told to expect at any moment?"

Evidence from old quakes suggest that the PacNW gets 9.0 richter quake about every 600 years. It has been about 600 years since the last one. But 7.n is nothing to sneeze at.

-- Little Nipper (canis@minor.net), February 28, 2001.

3 crushing injury 1 burn patient, 12 other 12 non seriouse injuries reported at Harberview-the hospital designated to take people in an earthquake. They say an elevator fell somewhere. My aughter called again and is going to stay at school until closing.

-- Cherri (jessam5@home.com), February 28, 2001.

Some pics from CNN..if these don't work go to CNN link

-- Peg (pegmcleod@mediaone.net), February 28, 2001.

That top picture, the one of the Fenix Underground cracks me up. I'm sure the place looks better on the inside than it did before. I saw King's X play there a couple of years ago, and trust me, the place was a dump. Doug, Jerry, and Ty rocked though. The Galactic Cowboys opened the show and were quite good.

-- dudesy (dudesy@37.com), February 28, 2001.

the news always sucks when something like this happens. CNN jumped right on it, and got 90% WRONG. Buncha dorkwads. Scared relatives all over the country, and swamped phone lines. dorkwads!

It was really no big deal. been in bigger ones in Cali. Quake was so deep, it could have been a 8.0 and wouldn't have been much worse. however, if it had been only a mile or two from the surface, we would be seeing some serious sh*t right now.

-- Super Fred (fu_q_y2kfreaks@hotmail.com), February 28, 2001.

I'm glad to hear you and yours are ok Cherri! I wondered about you when I heard it. Having been in few myself, when I lived in California, it truly is an experience filled with fear, and the unknowing of WHEN WILL IT STOP? I'm so glad your daughter got thru her fear, and decided to ride it out! I was saddened to see the pictures of Pioneer Square-quite a wonderful place, IME. Peg, thanks for posting the pix!

-- Aunt Bee (Aunt__Bee@hotmail.com), February 28, 2001.

Cherri,

I'm glad you're OK, too. I was going to email you when I saw this post here. :)

-- Stephen M. Poole (smpoole7@bellsouth.net), February 28, 2001.

Cherri:

Nope, not the big one everyone has been talking about. Wrong fault. Good to see that you are OK. It was deep and damage was not great [so I read]. Talked to family and there was minor damage as far north as Mt Vernon. Haven't talked to folks in Bellingham. Amazing; dodged another bullet.

Cheers,,,

Z

The gods are not happy with the land of nuts and fruits!!

-- Will (righthere@home.now), March 01, 2001.

Wow!

I am just west of Seattle in Victoria and we got a good "flex" from that shake. Right now Y2K would be a blip compared to the reality of something effecting the earth from Portland Or. to southern BC.

One funny thing in BC is that a school was going to have a earthquake drill at 11:00 am and it hit a few minutes before. The schools up here have disaster bins that have enough to supply school needs for 72 hrs. This includes food shelter water ect.. I was impressed.

There are folk that won't live on the coast because of the shakers. I will live on the coast but as close to the ground as possible :o)

Good luck Seattle folks!

-- Brian (imager@home .com), March 01, 2001.

I live about 5 miles from the epicenter, anyways I was sound asleep (I work nights) and it woke me up. But, I was not going to let it get me out of bed, the roof could have collapsed on me, but I was not going to get out of bed.

-- dudesy (dudesy@37.com), March 01, 2001.

Dude, you are right. IF the roof would have collapsed on you, most likely you would NOT of got out of the bed, short of doing so with a toe tag.

Cherri. Glad all is well.

-- sumer (shh@aol.con), March 01, 2001.

'Tis true sumer, but at least I wouldn't have to work nights anymore.

-- dudesy (dudesy@37.com), March 01, 2001.

Brian, I'm glad you checked in, I was wondering how you'd done. I saw on the news tonight that there was a big run on prep stuff from a store that specializes in such things, in Vancouver.

Anyone heard from Sis?
