Posting, trolling, spamming...is it time to form a posse?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

FS posted a very fine rant recently. His complaint is that "Ain't" is hogging the board with too many posts. So I counted.

In the past two days (as of 10:30pm eastern time) "Ain't" has posted 11 threads out of 43. Cherri is the runner up with 7 threads posted. The rest of the pack hovers at about 4-3 threads, Uncle Bob, Lars, al-d, etc.

Now my questions, is 11 out of 43 too many new threads for one poster? Should there be a limit on new threads by an individual poster? If so, how many new threads do you think a poster should be allowed to initiate per day? Do you have any other thoughts on this subject, or do you have any thoughts on how this forum could be improved?

Thanks for your support.

So long as the posts are not duplicates, I see no reason to place any limit on anyone. If anyone tries to post the same thing 100 times in a row, then these should probably be collapsed into a single thread.

Our most frequent posters are certainly repetitive in terms of general theme, but hey, we all started out talking about the same subject, right?

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), February 27, 2001.

I don't visit this forum much anymore, so my response probably shouldn't be included in any poll, but the way I see it, THIS forum was a takeoff on the Uncensored forum, and the Uncensored Forum was a takeoff on TB2000. NONE of these fora were significant in their QUALITY, but everyone knew that SOME nut would be posting, even if we had insomnia and woke up at 3am.

I'd always found it comforting to see someone else awake at a weird hour. It was like living in New York and visiting Tulsa [where even the drugstores close at 8pm.] We KNEW there was some action SOMEWHERE, and at that hour, we didn't particularly CARE what kind.

Anyway, that's how I see this forum [for good or bad], and it's pretty much how I've seen the fora that preceded it.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), February 27, 2001.

Who am I? UD...we're all adults here (some of us have a little more time on our hands than others). I wouldn't sweat it. IMHO Manny is a pain in the ass for Boswell and me. I'd like to see him eat shit and die but that isn't gonna happen. Other posters have personality conflicts with different people as well. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter. And, if we were all cival to one another it would be plain boring. Just relax, drink a beer, and watch the magic screen with Unk's Wild Wild West on it.

-- Uncle Bob (unclb0b@aol.com), February 27, 2001.

Unk-

I disagree with any "rule" that could come out of soliciting input. My rant was not about setting rules-It was about self policing. That is why I made the analogy to the old west in a later comment.

Hey, I could be out on a limb here, but it is my OPINION that Aint spams with the cut and pastes. We have seen people agree and people disagree. Great. At least I made an attempt to finger a person I feel was shitting on the board. We know Flint thinks Cherri is shitting on the board. Good. It is out in the open. Like one large family we are putting our disagreements out on the table.

I came from a family where nothing was talked about-everyone hid their feelings like a theif was going to come in the night and steal them. In my life today I am damn well going to express them. If Aint and others want to dismiss them, fine. That is well and good.

Rules regarding number of posts would be unwelcome to me. I am not asking Aint not to post-I am not trying to censor Aint. I am asking him to let other people talk. I am saying as part of this family that his behavior is unwelcome. And yes, I do talk this way to my OWN family at times if I let my frustration get the best of me, as I obviously did earlier today.

So ya have my input.

-- FutureShock (gray@matter.think), February 27, 2001.

UB, what the HELL is that thing doing?

While the novelty of Aints' post have worn off, they're not that bothersome, either. Or Cherris'. I would even respond to some, if they weren't so dang longwinded(ahem).

Nobody, at least in this culture, has enough attention span or motivation to take in 5 or 6 lectures of doubtful importance in one day, except maybe Flint, but the post can be ignored, if you don't want to read em.

FS even said he was having a bad day, and I believe him.

OK

"but everyone knew that SOME nut would be posting, even if we had insomnia and woke up at 3am."

Anita, are you a nut and do you have insomnia?

“Do you have any other thoughts on this subject, or do you have any thoughts on how this forum could be improved?”

Don’t fix what ain’t broke! (Now there is the multi-purpose suggestion of the day)

"Now my questions, is 11 out of 43 too many new threads for one poster? Should there be a limit on new threads by an individual poster?"

How about 0 posts for any poster and let's shut this place down. Tick Toc, Tick Toc.

Unkie, buddy,

What the hell was that question? Ya wanna put limits on something? Nah, folks do it to themselves!! With the exception of our famous lady, I haven't seen any problems (and she doesn't seem to be around THESE parts). Noxious, repetitive posters? Sure we will always have those. It is the nuggets of info, and introspection and insight that most of us come here for! As I recall on the night of the inception of this place, it was to be a free for all!! We can self-govern by our partication, can't we?

-- Aunt Bee (Aunt__Bee@hotmail.com), February 28, 2001.

LOL Barry!(Don’t fix what ain’t broke!)

-- (cin@cin.cin), February 28, 2001.

Hell yaw'll,as far as I'm concerned, this is the best little place on the net, suits me fine with no rules,no censorship.

But what's really cool is that SF can stand up and say Ain't is ------- and Ain't can respond accordingly,no holds barred and in plain sight for all to see and partake in.*THIS* is why we fought or prayed for a totally free board, tis the fruits of ours,Unk's and OTFR's travails.Tis poetry in motion, free flowing yet stuck in the mud all the time.

It is one of the closest things (IMHO) of being representative to most of our ideals about how our country might operate, free and governed totally by the mood and the interjection of it's inhabitants, the tone set by the participants.Although a mini-microcasm,I see the paralell and appreciate it.

We wouldn't be havin' this conversation over at SLEZ,folks,we ALL would have been barred long before now.

Naw Unk,I don't have any suggestions for ya,cause I think everything's just hunkey dorey, just as it should be,just as it is.It can only get better as it finds its own definetive course.

But then again....... I might be the kind of lunatic that likes his buttocks swarted with used vacume cleaner accessories.

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), February 28, 2001.

"I might be the kind of lunatic that likes his buttocks swarted with used vacume cleaner accessories."
I think you need to go to the Shadow Lane Convention in Palm Springs on Labor Day for that.

... Should there be a limit on new threads by an individual poster?

C'mon! Unk didn't write this! He doesn't want to police this forum. Get a clue, people!

-- (continuingt@yankour.chains), February 28, 2001.

Unk, my usual state of serenity having been disrupted by the recent avalanche of posts that are gratuitously repetitive in theme if not letter, I feel compelled to abandon the principle of free expression and to request that additional rules be instituted, to wit,

4.

5.

6.

-- David L (bumpkin@dnet.net), February 28, 2001.

Nah, I wrote it, but y'all should realise that I am only conducting a poll, stirring the pot, soliciting advice that I most likely will ignore anyway.

Have a nice day!

;-)

PS, I'm glad to see that y'all feel the same about it as I do.

-- Uncle Deedah (unkeed@yahoo.com), February 28, 2001.

Posse? Did someone call for a posse? Been awhile, but my horse could use the exercise. Are we gonna ride over to Ain'ts, hold him down and RIP that damn pacifier from his mouth? Maybe he'll be forced to suck his thumb as a substitute, thereby limiting his ability to post here. Now THAT'S a plan!

I realize the polls have closed. Nonetheless, I state for posterity I am not in favor of term limits. Let the electorate choose their executioners!

Huh?

-- Rich (howe9@shentel.net), February 28, 2001.

Future Shock obviously feels threatened by views other than his own. Maybe you could start a special FS forum in which he would be the only one allowed to post.

-- dudesy (dudesy@37.com), February 28, 2001.

Hangs head in shame, and proclaims "I'm a follower, not a leader".

Leave it as is.

Aint likes politics, thats all.

"Manny is a pain in the ass for Boswell and me."

Uncle Bob - lighten up a little. Don't let Manny get you down. I also find him annoying, mainly because of what he represents. But I also enjoy the jousting that goes on with him. As has been said before, every open forum usually attracts at least one Village Idiot. Keep the faith, many of us like your posts. And don't worry about Boswell. He seems to handle things that come his way quite nicely. Them rural Idahoans are tough!

-- Fan of Uncle Bob (-@ignore.the.lunatic.fringe), February 28, 2001.

No posse. Just let 'em have fun.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), February 28, 2001.

Fan of Uncle Bob,

"As has been said before, every open forum usually attracts at least one Village Idiot."

You mean Dubya has been checking out this forum?

-- Jack Booted Thug (governmentconspiracy@NWO.com), February 28, 2001.

Fan of UB, thanks for the kind words! That Manny fellar don't bother me none. Learned long time ago how to handle his family. My farm is on a dead-end road with canyons on 3 sides and when guys like him used to show up wantin to sell something or start a fight we used to feed to em to the pigs. They'd eat shoes, belts and billfolds, but they spit out the joint replacements, and then we'd take the shit that was passed with the bone remnants and bury it out in Big Canyon. Best way I could come up with!

-- Boswell (cjseed@webtv.net), February 28, 2001.

Dudesy

Again, you would be? Again, how can I take your comments under advisement If I do not know who you are? Were you a lurker? If not are you a newbie? If none of those, then you are a coward.

posse

I didn't know it was spelled that way...maybe that's why I'm not getting any...

Unk, Leave it the way it is.Those of us that have been around a couple of years have learnt to understand the ebb & flow.Sure some "themes" are boring but since when has boring been a cause for censorship.Sorry I can't join the hunt ..if it takes place..Europe has turned into a fortress this week with restrictions on all hoofed animal and human movements.A little thing called Foot & Mouth Disease.

-- Chris (enquiries@griffenmill.com), February 28, 2001.

Hey Chris, long time no see.

Good to see ya posting.

-- sumer (shh@aol.con), February 28, 2001.

uhh Syd, it's a live e-mail so why don't you write me and we'll talk about it. I'm such a coward I use a real e-mail, funny though gray@matter.think seems to not be a real e-mail.

-- dudesy (dudesy@37.com), February 28, 2001.

Hi,Sumer, I'm mainly in lurking mode nowadays.Threads on American politics do not exactly fill me with an overwhelming urge to jump in !On this side of the "Pond" the Irish President has upstaged Slick Willie. Not only does he have a mistress but she is at his side at Official Dinners etc & overseas state visits.Last week Bertie went to Rome to see the new Irish Cardinal being blessed by the Pope & to the not - so -secret amusement of most people here, on this occasion,he didn't take his mistress.

-- Chris (enquiries@griffenmill.com), February 28, 2001.

Dudemaster-

If you have been around these environs for long you would know I had my identity stolen a few years ago and it was much grief in setting it straight. Those who I treasure, and who treasure me, have my e-mail address, so your answer to my question is to counterattack? Bad tactic. Zero points for you. Outside of a few weeks in December, I have posted under this handle and e-mail adress for 15 months. All know who I am. I am not into playing guessing games as to who you are. And I am not into raising this into a pissing match with you by privately e-mailing. My decision not to post a live e-mail addy is based on experience and wisdom, not cowardice.

If you know us so well, again I ask, who are you?

-- FutureShock (gray@matter.think), February 28, 2001.

FutureShock,

I am not trying to counterattack you. I am also not trying to pick a bone with you. You have your reasons for not giving your e- mail addy, and I have my reasons for not identifying my old handle.

Personally I have enjoyed many of your rants, can't say I have agreed with too much of them, but I have found some of them to be quite thoughtful. The reason I came down hard on you yesterday is because I think you were majorly overzealous in attacking aint. I still believe it is because you disagree with aint's politics, but not aints style.

I do apologize to you though for the manner in which I expressed my displeasure with your post. I will not try to take cheapshots against you in the future.
