Marlborough Drought Record

By Staff Reporter Matt Rilkoff at 1:22pm, 28th February 2001

Drought conditions in Marlborough have reached record levels.

The Fire Service takes readings that measure ground moisture levels and reflect the likelihood of fire, and yesterday's reading was the highest ever recorded in New Zealand.

The Marlborough District Council said the measurement exceeded the previous record set in Clyde two years ago.

It was nearly double that measured two months ago when fire swept through 7000 hectares of farmland on the outskirts of Blenheim.

Marlborough Mayor Gerald Hope said it was staggering to see the area so dry and it hammered home the need for extreme care to be taken to help prevent fires.

Total fire bans are in place throughout Marlborough
