If magma is so hot that it can melt everything, then how do scientists and the likes take samples of it when it is still in this extremely hot liquid form?

Scientists have heatproof suits that allow them to move very close to the lava and take samples, there is a picture of this on page 103 in the text (figure 5.25).

I mean what can they take a sample with that the magma wouldn't melt?
