County voices electric concern

REVIEW-JOURNAL

Another voice weighed in Tuesday against permitting Nevada power companies to sell their power plants as part of electrical deregulation.

The Clark County Commission urged the Legislature to block Sierra Pacific Resources and Nevada Power Co. from selling their power plants until regional power problems have been stabilized.

The resolution opposing electrical deregulation was designed to make sure the county was on record taking a leadership role to protect the public, Commissioners Mary Kincaid and Dario Herrera said.

The issue is before the Legislature, but the law gives extensive powers to Gov. Kenny Guinn about whether to permit the deregulation process to continue.

The resolution urged the Legislature and the Public Utilities Commission to proceed cautiously with electrical deregulation "to assure that markets are significantly developed to allow true competition in the electric generation industry."
