VIKINGS REPORT

Stringer to rework contract

Pioneer Press

---------------------------------------------------------------------- -- BILL WILLIAMSON STAFF WRITER ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -- The Vikings continued to chop away at their salary-cap problems by restructuring the contract of Pro Bowl right tackle Korey Stringer. The sides have agreed in principle on a deal that would save the Vikings about $1 million in salary cap room this season. Stringer's Cincinnati-based agent, Jim Gould, confirmed the agreement Tuesday but declined to divulge details. The Vikings do not discuss contract renegotiations. It is believed Stringer's restructuring affects only this season's pay. Stringer's base salary will drop, and the money will be recouped through the life of his contract, which runs through 2003. The Vikings are about $12 million over the salary cap and must be at the $67.4 million limit by March 2. They have made salary-cap room by restructuring the contracts of Stringer and linebacker Ed McDaniel and by releasing kick returner David Palmer and defensive lineman John Burrough. The next restructuring targets likely will be safety Robert Griffith and guard David Dixon. The agents for both players confirmed they have begun preliminary talks about restructuring their contracts. Both deals could be done by the end of the week and could save about $3 million. Neil Cornrich, the agent of recently retired running back Robert Smith, hinted Smith will agree to officially retire after June 1 to ease the Vikings' cap hit for this season by $1.6 million. ``Robert loved playing for the Vikings and is interested in helping any way he can,

Robert Smith sure is a class act and undoubtedly would have continued playing if his injuries had been less serious. His loyality to the team is so evident and I, for one, will greatly miss him!

Couldn't agree with you more, Jan. He's definitely a class act and I too will miss him. If I could sit down and tip a few beers with any current or ex-Viking, without a doubt I'd choose Robert.

As far as sharing beers with former Vikings, I'd have to include Fran Tarkenton, Paul Krause, and all 4 of the original Purple People Eaters at my table.
