Filters: Canon and others

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

With my Canon lenses I use Canon "Protect" filters 72 and 77mm. When I wanted to buy Canon UV filters in addition, I realized that Canon doesn't carry them for 77mm (it does, however, for the other smaller sizes). As I tried to find out why, I was told that Canon filters are cr*p and it's better to get Hoya, Heliopan, Nikon or B+W. My question is, is that true, or just a "hype?" I personally can't take a word for it, as I always thought Canon is a respected brand.

Tiffen USA makes most of Canon's filters and there are the el cheapo models. Any filter from Heliopan, Nikon or B+W would be better. If you buy Hoya, pay more and get one of the multi-coated models. Zoom lenses are prone to flare so you'll want the most flare protection. I especially like the Nikon filters: excellent coatings and very thin.
