NY state / county fair dates

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Kathy in NY, Do you or anyone in the empire state know of a site that might tell me the dates of the various farm fairs in NY? Pioneerpatti and I have taken the kids to Hector Fair, when we camped at Watkins Glen. Last year, we visited Saratoga Fair when we went camping up that way. Looking for more adventure this year, but we need to find the dates in advance for planning purposes. Thank you in advance. We really love NY countrysides... it'll be great when they finally retire the witch and the turkey in one of them. NYuk, NYuk...

Well, I'm not Cathy but here's a link to a list of Fairs in NYS.

I know I'll be at Broome County, and will probably be at Afton, and State Fair. The State Fair depends on if my daughter, Kady, qualifies this year. I may be at Walton too depending on what our show schedule looks like.

Thank you Stacy! My little girl (5) was just asking the other day if we could go back to the Saratoga Fair, where they had the 'racing pigs' and fun rides. I told her maybe, but I'd really like to do a different fair, each year. The site you mentioned probably has a LOT of places we might like. We usually try to camp somewhere 1500' elevation, or higher, in July/August (it's cooler in the tents), so it'll have to coincide with this year's destination. Thanks again for your response.

Hey Action Dude, did you say you live in New Jersey? Where abouts? I lived in Edison for 5 years, Harmony for 5 years, and Phillipsburg for a while. Any of those places sound familiar?

Stacy, thanks for the listing of fairs. I love the county fairs, and I rode in all the shows (western) when I was a kid, too. There was Ride-a-buck, pole bending, barrel races, gosh that was fun, but very stressful, too, as I remember. I had a small palimino named Bucky. Sigh.....I haven't been on a horse in at least 10 years.

Maybe we can all make it a point to let each other know when and where we plan on going this summer, so we can hook up.

Try www.washingtoncountyfair.com this site should give you some good information. The fair is about 50 miles south of us and is always a good experience each year. 73's Arnold

Hi Cathy,

Did Bucky live up to his name? (grin)

Kady shows huntseat, western, and gymkhana (barrel race etc.) and I think she'll try saddleseat and dressage this year depending on how reasonably I can pick up the tack. We lucked out and free leased her a nice Quarter Horse for the rail classes (he has a intermittent lameness problem that can be dealt with) and she has Star for gymkhana and, maybe, saddleseat.

I ride western in the Parents Pleasure classes at the 4H qualifying shows and Broome County Fair, and I think I'll ride 39 and over barrels on the local open circuit this year. Star isn't competitive for Kady in the open shows 14-18 age group anymore--those kids fly and he's an older gentleman. We'd do alright in the old ladies classes tho.

We'll be camping at the Broome County Fair for at least a couple of days in July. Most likely Kady will qualify for States in at least one division, we went for gymkhana last year and she placed in every event. So, we'll be up there for a week or so. She also went up for the day in Hippology (study of horses) and the Broome County team did well. 4H is a great program I was in it as a kid too.

I'm hoping will be at the Afton Fair and, possibly, Walton this year also. If anyone gets to these Fairs I have red hair, blue eyes, and that white skin that only the Irish can have, Kady has very light blonde hair, and blue eyes, but the little scut tans nicely. Star (show name I'm a Star Down Home) is a black bay with a star, and Pooh (show name My Pooh Bear) is a liver chestnut with a white face. There will be name tags on the stall doors Kady and I are never far away.

Hope to see you there!

Cathy, No, not that far north. // Thanks Arnold, we'll check it out, as well. My kids heard us talking about fairs, and now they're getting all antsy... another 6 months, children !!
