How about a bouncing machine? You could make it out of old motors and coil or spring steel. The contestants could have to make it bounce directionally towards an goal like a race or they could seen how high they could get to retreive something. In the archives of flying machines I remember just such a machine which was round and bounced up and down. Sadly it never flew, but it still makes me laugh when I see it.
