Montreal fire forces schools to close
LACHUTE, Que. (CP) -- Fire struck at an industrial complex on Monday morning, sending thick smoke into the sky and forcing nearby residents to leave their homes.
The fire began in a paper-products company in Lachute, about 70 kilometres northwest of Montreal, and spread to adjacent businesses.
Environmental experts were on hand because of fears the blaze might spread to a nearby plastics company. The cause of the fire wasn't yet known.
Town officials also closed some schools.
"Some elementary-school students have been relocated to another school," said Mario Fournier, a Lachute spokesman.
About 20 homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Nobody was injured.
