Geordies: market leaders in optimism?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread |
Question: Do we delude ourselves that our players are any good? I know the issue yesterday was that that they were already mentally on the plane to Spain but generally, are they as good as we think we are? Who are our genuinely good players?

Only class I see are goalies, Hughes and Dyer. Sadly too young to be 100% consistent.Rest are journeymen

Dyer when he can be arsed. Solano when things are going right for the team, Griffin, possibly Harper and Given, Shearer is still a Prem player and possibly Cort who hasn't had a chance. The rest are pretending to be good Premiership players when in reality they would not look good in a Div One team.

yes sorry I missed Griffin, he has it all, including attitude

Actually, after we played Spurs at WHL, a Spurs lass e mailed me saying that she would kill for Griff and Hughes in the Spurs side - I mean, I think they are the DBs but they aren't our most "storied" players so it wss nice to see someone else recognising them. She, incidentally, has been praising Stephen Carr for the past 5 seasons so she knows class when she sees it.

Not Proven ..Lua-Lua, Coppinger,Bernard, Offjong , McGuffie.
What are they deein if they cannot get on the bench ..McGlen.KERR ETC
not Impressed with , Bobby Robson`s tactical nous to date, luvverly man though, his purchasing, as with another I cite Don Hutchinson Wadsworth and Milne , nah nah , its a fact but the young men impersonating footballers at our team will not react to the vibes of the golden oldies we have in charge, tales of past achievments will go unheard , has Wadsworth any?, its life, its reality in world, harsh but true. I looked at the tech Area and what did I see, zilch, defeatism etched on their faces, the back room staff do not impress or fill me with confidence one iota, sorry Bobby but it needs to be said, glad debuilder posted the Houlier article

agree mostly with your sentiments buff but it was only recently (post leeds?) that it was Rob Lee who made the difference. All this yo yo-ing between depression and hope is making me dizzy. It was a crap game but what did we really expect?

I just think senior players have it too easy, what do they have to do to get dropped into the reserves? This La Manga trip is a joke, they should have switched flights and put them on a one way ticket to the outer Hebridies, Cast them away on a freezing remote island and told them they could only get off the island when theyv'e learnt to play with passion commitment and as a team.

this is all getting too harshfootball is a performance with others
sorry to be so vivid rik mate but how would you feel if Pauline sent you to the Hebrides every time you 'lost' in you know what?
(one feels a Hebrides season ticket would be yours if what she says is correct)
Yes they were shit but they're not the leagues best players are they? :-0

Well Swifty, when you've got so many women to satisfy (including rather a tasty one who claims to be a famous TTTV presenter)You can't give 100% everytime you perform.Maybe, this is the reason the team is shite, perhaps calabacy (however it's spealt)is the answer?

We could just send them to live in London for awhile. It's already proved to make them impotent on the pitch. ;-)

I've been wondering for a while if the problem is not partly the coaching. YBR plainly doesn't (shouldn't? couldn't?) do everything himself. He let Steve Clarke go, I thought probably a little harshly in the aftermath of the RG era (bit short for an era really). There was little fuss at the time, or even comment. With hindsight, though, would we really see Wadsworth as better?
-- Anonymous, February 12, 2001
Didn't Clarke ask to leave though? Something about going off to do his coaching badge or wanted to go back to Chelsea or something like that?

I've not been overly impressed wiyh Wadsworth - I remember comments about his previous jobs (Colchester???). Not inspiring. I mean, he couldn't even keep YBR awake at Hillheads when the Resorves played Whitley. What chance livening up the first team squad?

Not inspiring. That's the description I was looking for earlier re Wadsworth. Started a post, but just couldn't think of what it is that bugs me about him. He's just....there. Carver seems more inspiring, certainly has more energy, but he still seems to be learning the coaching end of things. More the eager student than anything close to a finished product.
