Elan ticks like a clock/ eats batteries.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I got a call from my wife last night. She is on vacation with her Elan (original Elan with Canon 28-105, regular back, not data back). She had a dead battery, put in a spare, and now the camera has an audible "tick" when the Command Dial is in the L position (she says it sounds just like a clock ticking). When she goes to the normal functions on the dial, the ticking stops and the camera seems to be working normally. Any ideas? I'm guessing something with the self-timer. She may have a fun time getting through airport security coming home with a "ticking" noise coming from her carry-on (joking, she knows she can remove the battery).

I don't know what's wrong with the camera, but I would recommend that your wife leave the battery in, with the camera set to something other that "L" when she goes through airport security. The security folks will be more suspicious of an inoperative camera (one that does not go click), than a camera that goes click if they try it.
