Man Shot Outside White House; Bush Safe

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A man brandishing a gun just outside the White House grounds was shot in the leg and subdued by Secret Service agents on Wednesday, officials said.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said President George W. Bush had been exercising in the residence at the time but had never been in any danger.

``One individual was brandishing a weapon outside the south west fence line, not inside the complex,'' said Secret Service spokesman Marc Connolly.

``He was shot in the leg by a Secret Service Uniformed Division Officer...The situation is secure,'' he added.

CNN identified the man as being 47 years old and showed pictures of him arriving at the nearby George Washington University Hospital by ambulance. It was not immediately clear what the man's motives were.

The incident which occurred at 11:36 a.m. EST, prompted a security alert at the White House in the center of Washington, with armed officers spreading out across the fenced grounds and a helicopter hovering overhead.

Secret Service officials said only one man appeared to be involved in the incident.

There were varying accounts of how many shots were fired. Witnesses interviewed on television said they initially heard between one to three shots, prompting an influx of security officers to the area.

They said there was a standoff of 10 to 15 minutes in which the officers urged the man to hand over his gun.

An eyewitness interviewed by CNN, said he heard police tell the man ``drop the gun. It doesn't have to be this way. We can talk to you.''

Witness said they then heard a single shot and officers ran in and subdued the man.

John Piana, a tourist from Phoenix, Arizona, told Reuters he had just emerged from a White House tour and was walking along the west side of the building when the police started pushing people back, saying that there was ``a situation.''

He said police cars drove up, officers got out and stationed themselves behind their cars, drawing their guns.

After a few minutes, Piana said he heard ``one loud bang'' south of the White House and at that point officials started running toward the noise.

``All I heard was one loud bang, then right after the bang everybody started running to where the noise came from,'' Piana said.

The shooter was identified as a 47 year old man from Evansville, IN. Please cut him some slack, it's not easy being a Hoosier. The oppression of being surrounded by unending corn and soybeans is extreme. The unnerving sound of basketballs bouncing and bouncing and bouncing.....and March madness has not yet begun!

Evansville is in the SW corner of the state and has the added strain of proximity to KY. Sometimes the pressure is enough to make you....well, throw a goddamn chair across a goddamn basketball court.

Tax protestor, duh what a surprise. Maybe it was Milne?

-- Doc Paulie (fannybubbles@usa.net), February 08, 2001.

DP,

I don't think he was a tax "protester". He was a former employee of the IRS. Maybe he hated Bush for wanting to lower taxes. Or maybe looking at 1040s all day just drove him o'er the edge.

The above poster that says the shooter made a mistake by not killing the President is probably one of the worst and most inapropriate statements I have ever read from another human being. I and many others hate Clinton for what he has done to that position and office but I have never wished him harm. It's a sad day when somebody can wish the President of the United States murdered. That poster shows no more respect for that office than the previous President.
