I would deffinately say that he is. In the literary aspect at least.Edgar Allan Poe is noted in the top ten most influential writers of our time. Poe has inspired 5 other outstanding noted authors and just about every high school reader as well. So as far as is he a hero? Not in the sense of storming the Mt. Suribachi on Iwa Gima, but deffinately in the literary world.
(info on top ten most infl. taken from a literary magazine Antaeus in the spring of 1989. by the editor Daniel Halpern. also: Ann Charters, and Samuel Charters. Literature and Its Writers. Boston: Bedford Books p, 22. note book should be underlined.)

Define "hero." Anyone who can take poverty, grief, and despair and turn them into art is a hero to me.

I think he is considering the wonderful poems and stories he has written. He is also an inspiration to me because he has had a hard life and put his anger in writting not words or actions. I really love his work.
