greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

What the fuck is this? Fucking scum Republicans are so worried about money that they won't even allow the Clintons to have personal gifts without PAYING for them??? Jesus H. Christ, Republicans never cease to amaze me at how low they can go. What a crock of shit.

I'm not usually up this early. I think it was too many cookies. I think the wheat made me doze, so I went to bed at eight, and then woke up at one. I hate it when that happens.

The Republicans are the biggest busy-body's around, always sticking their nose in everybody else's business and oh-so-quick to act with indignation and insults (see above replies) when their (ahem) morals have been insulted. Nevermind that Reagan's pals bought him a $2.2 million mansion when HE left office. No indignation on that count, eh?

Perhaps the Republicans can explain how they justify their selective memories on "moral" grounds.

BTW, Carlos, Why do you think that I'm marching to some kind of lockstep? I consider myself one of the more intellectually stimulating thinkers on this forum.

Should I try to get a couple of hrs sleep, or make some coffee.......decisions.......

Intellectually stimulating? When are you actually going to have an original idea, Kofe?

-- I am (wondering@waiting.com), February 03, 2001.

With the amount that the Clintons will pay, that will bring the total to around the same amount Daddy and Babs Bush took -- after only four years in the White House.

Funny, I don't remember any moral indignation over that one, though.....

One thing you never see the republican "supporters" mention is that the $190,000 represents the total amount of gifts the Clintons decided to keep over eight years. Traditionally, the First Family waits until the last year to do this. So if we really look at this, the gifts the Clintons decided to keep that they had received over eight years was around $190,000. Daddy and Babs Bush kept approximatley $130,000 worth ..... which was a four-year total.

But mentioning that wouldn't support the "moral indignation" very well, now would it?

-- oh the hypocrisy..... (PatriciaS@lasvegas.com), February 03, 2001.

I don't see any problem with the Clinton's complying with the federal laws that relate to the receipt of gifts by elected officials or employees of the federal government.

The law stipulates that gifts over a certain value must be reported and automatically become federal property. The intent of the law is to prevent the influence of elected officials or employees by "gifts", (as opposed to cash), from private individuals or foreign governments.

This is the same law that prohibits elected officials or employees from using "frequent flyer" miles, or other commercial promotions, while traveling or doing business for the government.

If President Reagan received the gift mentioned in an earlier post WHILE IN OFFICE, that should receive the same scrutiny as the Clintons gifts. If the gift was received after leaving his elected office, and returning to life as a private citizen, then the IRS laws regarding the payment of taxes on gifts applies, but not the federal law regarding the receipt of gifts while employed or in office.

As Mrs. Clinton is now an elected official of the federal government as a Senator from New York, the law still applies to them.

Significant "gifts" to any public official are always suspect as bribes, or attempts to curry favor. Nicely stated wolverine.

-- Lars (larsguy@yahoo.com), February 03, 2001.

A gift IS a gift.

They should NOT have to pay anything.

As a matter of fact, they should NEVER have to pay again for anything in life. All they receive (including pay) should be FREE..

Long live Billary, Bill and the dog!!!!

Yes KoFE, Uncle Boob is far more intellectually stimulating than you. He knows how to copy and paste unsubstantiated rumors from the tabloid Sludgereport, and always manages to find those doctored up photos of the Clintons. Uncle Boob is actually a genius, he just pretends to be a retarded juvenile because he doesn't want to make anyone else feel inferior.

-- KoFE (your@town.USA), February 04, 2001.

They should at least have to pay income tax on these "gift". If I get a gift this large, I have to claim it as income under the "gift" portion of the tax code.

KoFE:

An amusing comment, coming as it does from someone who just misspelled the word "recognize" in the previous post. Good irony there.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), February 04, 2001.

Sheeple-

Did the Bushes or the Reagans have to pay taxes? If so, then the Clintons should. If not, then the Clintons shouldn't. They should be treated no differently than any other former first family.

BTW- I heard this morning on Meet the Press that Ronald Reagan got a house after he left office. Does anyone have any info on that? I'd be curious to know if he paid property taxes on it.

-- Tarzan the Ape Man (tarzan@swingingthroughthejunglewithouta.net), February 04, 2001.

Personally, I don't have a problem with any president, whether it be Reagan, Carter, Bush or Clinton, repub or dem, getting realitively moderate gifts while in office, or as in Reagan's case, a whole house given to them by a private citizen after office, as long as explicit policy favors aren't tied to these gifts.

The reason? These guys are only paid $200K per year in personal salary for a job that's more difficult and much, much more important than your average CEO position - and your average CEO makes twice what the president makes in base salary alone, not to mention stock benefits and bonuses.

I think the gifts, expense accounts, pension, SS protection for life, and all the other benefits are justifiable rewards for spending time in the white house when they could have been making big money. I'm sure most people in this forum don't agree.

(And if someone gives a president or first lady a $4000 china set, they aren't expecting policy favors - they're hoping to get invited to the next fundraiser, the next charity dance, etc. They're hoping to be seen shaking hands with the pres. It's a social thing among this set. Always has been, big deal.)

-- Bemused (and_amazed@you.people), February 04, 2001.

Tarzan,

Agreed, the Clinton's should only have to pay taxes if the others had to pay them. As far as Reagan's house, I had read that he actually paid for the home after he left office. Do a search, and I'm sure you will find the same article which I read.

The question on many people's mind is how can Senator Clinton accept these gifts? She is now a member of the 100 club, and the acceptance of gifts fall under laws as well.

Sheeple

-- (Sheeple@Greener.Pastures), February 04, 2001.

Bemused,

I think that Clinton is the last President to get SS protection for life. If memory serves me correctly, in the past two to four years a new law was passed that only provides SS protection for a maximum of 10 years after a President leaves office, starting with President Bush.

Damn! busted again! And by my arch-nemesis, Flint, no less.

-- KoFE (your@town.USA), February 04, 2001.

KoFE: I suspect The "arch-nemesis" tag may be one sided.

Sheeple: Cutting it off after 10 years makes pretty good sense to me. After that point, any crazies or terrorists out there who want to pursue an ex-president would probably already be identified and neutralized.

-- Bemused (and_amazed@you.people), February 05, 2001.

Simple. She got the gifts as a private citizen, over a period of eight years. The decision to keep or return may not have been made until the last month or so, but the gifts themselves were given to the President and his wife, a private citizen.
