Protesters force PGW office to close

By Akweli Parker INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Armed with protest signs, their pent-up outrage and $172 in mostly loose change, a small group of demonstrators shut down a Philadelphia Gas Works payment office in Center City for nearly an hour today.

Pennsylvania ACORN (the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) sought to send the message to PGW managers that customers must scrimp every penny to keep up with runaway natural gas bills.

At the height of the protest, more than a dozen ACORN members peacefully chanted and picketed inside the PGW payment center at 1137 Chestnut. Several city police officers milled inside during the commotion, but made no arrests.

PGW workers stopped accepting payments and locked the doors to the office after a customer and ACORN member presented a bill for $172 and attempted to pay for it in change.

They would of had big problems if any one was arrested! for a peaceful assembly!

If a comapany refuses to take change as payment without prior notice they forfiet that payment! Prior notice means that the bill must specify that they will not take small change for more than xx% of the amount due. Be sure to get it in writing that you are being turned away or video tape will work as well. :))

BTW you can not be denied from using the dollar coins.

I once paid a very large bill in dimes, and broke the seal on every bag so they had to be recounted, a bag had opened and spilled to the floor too, oops! The cashier had tried to say that they would not take the payment, I said then sign here. When asked why, I said because that means you would not accept legal tender and thus forfiet this payment. The customer service I had received in the future was signifcantly improved.
