Sega ends game console production

TOKYO -- Japan's troubled Sega Corp said on Wednesday it would end production of its Dreamcast games console and restructure to concentrate on games software.

Sega spokesman Miyako Shimizu, confirming the move, said: 'We will continue the Dreamcast business including sales of hardware, but it is selling, not making it,' she said, adding that how the business would proceed was still under consideration.

In a separate statement, Sega of America announced that the company was transforming itself into a 'third party videogame publisher for game consoles, focusing on its advantage in the networked gaming arena'.

It said the price of the Dreamcast console in the United States would be cut to US$99.95 from Feb 4.

On Monday, Sega announced it had agreed to supply software to the new Game Boy Advance portable console of arch-rival Nintendo Corp. --AFP
