Ideas for Junkyard Wars Challenges

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

I think you could mine quite a few ideas from the arena of construction equipment. For example, you could challenge the teams to build a steamroller. Not only do they have to power it, they have to come up with some way to create the heavy roller that does the flattening. The contest could then be to see which team can turn a pile of gravel into a road or pathway the fastest. (I don't think real asphalt would be wise.)

Another option for a challenge: building a pile driver. That would involve finding a powered way to lift and drop a heavy weight repeatedly. The teams would compete to see who could drive a 20-foot pole furthest into the ground over the course of a set time period (like ten minutes).

How about a demolition derby with four teams instead of two?
