I am Makot Taketani. I am at the third grade of Anza elementary school in Torrance, CA. I need to make a report about Mission San Francisco de Solano. Could you please teach me about it?

There is a wonderful book entitled California Place Names by Erwin G. Gudde. I'm sure it is available in your library.

Mr Gudde writes, "Of all great Franciscan friars, St Francis Solanus probably stood next to St Francis of Assisi in the esteem of the missionaries of California. As many as three places were named for him by members of the Portola expedition."

It is from this saint we get the name for Solano County.

Good Luck in your research.

The founding Missionary was Father Altamira who came from Barcelona, Spain, to manage Mission San Franciso de Asis. Three years after his arrival in California,he decided a new mission north of San Franciso Bay was needed. With the political assistance of Governor Luis Arguello,he founded this last California mission on July 4,1823.Three years later, however, his neophytes burned the wooden buildings of the new mission during an uprising. Father Altamira became discouraged and returned to Spain in Janurary,1823.It took 6 years to build Mission San Franciso de Solano. and thats all i have, your welcome, and im also doing the same report as you and im in fourth grade.
