Stroboframe Q-flip and A2e w/VG-10??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

With the VG-10 attached to the A2e (EOS-5) and the off camera shoe cord II attached, the camera is quite tall. I'm just wondering if the stroboframe quick flip is tall enough itself to physical fit the camera with grip (and shoe cord II)... and... if it does, does it put the flash high enough to avoid redeye effectively. I'm using a Sunpak 120J with a AFTTL module attached to the bottom, so... my flash *is* a little bit taller than a high end EOS speedlight (430ez, 540 ez, 550ex) I already use an Elan IIe with verticle grip and the stroboframe quickflip, but I believe the A2e w/VG-10 is quite a bit taller... ? Thanks

I don't think the A2 w/ VG-10 is that much taller than the Elan II w/ BP-50. Less than an inch probably, but I don't have an A2 anymore to check. I did use the A2 w/ VG-10 (as well as the Elan II w/ BP-50) attached to a Quick Flip and it did work, but I didn't think it was tall enough either. I occasionally took the grip off when using the bracket and that helped, but eventually got a taller bracket. One of Stroboframe's RL types. Much better.

I don't understand how you could put an Elan with a BP-50 on a Quick flip stroboframe bracket. I have that exact setup, and since the tripod mount in the BP-50 is off center, I have to remove it to put my camera on the flash bracket. Is there a way around this? Also, the height is not a problem, mechanically, either the A2 or the Elan II will fit within the stroboframe (might be more prone to red eye though). THanks

My stroboframe quickflip has several screw holes along the length of the base plate. I just unscrewed the wing nut and moved it over to a hole that fit. But... I use my quickflip different from most. If you put the foam handle on the left side... when you go to flip the camera and swing the flash to the top... the verticle shutter release is at the bottom. This makes no sense. So... I put the foam handle on the right side of the camera. About 2 inches or so away from the camera. Just enough for me to slip my hand comfortably between the camera and the grip. I still hang on to the camera grip and I can feel the foam handle on the back of my right hand. It really makes the camera feel attached to my hand. With this set up... when I flip the flash for verticles... my verticle shutter release is where it is supposed to be. Now I can't imagine having the foam handle on the left. I certainly wouldn't hold it in my left hand while taking pictures. The camera balances far better if my left hand is cradling the lens (ready to zoom). I just bought a EOS-5 (A2e) with the VG-10. The placement of the holes didn't work. (Not enough room between the grip and the handle) so I got my father to drill and use his tap and dye (sp?) tools to give me a hole with the exact placement I needed. My next purchase will probably be the pro-rl bracket with the camera flip. My Sunpak 120j has a circular reflector (so it doesn't need to be tilted to cover the 35mm frame... and tilting this heavy flash *could* be hard on it's flash shoe) So if I can leave the flash on top and just flip the camera... it will probably be a better solution for me.
