garden tractor help

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

hiya folks, i'm hopin' ta get a few ideas from you.i have a gilson riding lawn mower, 'bout 20 some years old. the tractor and mower attachment are shot.i do, however, have a rototiller attachment that works excellent, but it's useless without a garden tractor.it cuts about a 4 foot wide path and is really heavy.i think gilson is no longer in business, and i'm wundrin' if it could be adapted to a (newer) different brand tractor?

thanks, fred

Hi Fred I had a 12hp sears tractor that was shot. I found a new motor ( tecumseh ) at Northern HY 14 hp . Replaced the eng with a slight modification. Motor cost $475. I have been using it for over 5 yrs. A replacement engine might be an option for you. NC JAY

Jay ,the motor burns oil bad but it aint shot....yet,the steering is all screwed up, the wiring is fried, drive shaft is warped by about 3" in the center, you guessed it,that's what trashed the steering, that also trashed the housing going to the transmission.about the only thing that's good is the tires, frame and wheel weights.

but thanks anyway,fred

Fred,

Is the tiller shaft or belt driven? "Garden tractor" to me means essentially a lawn tractor that has some attachments, while "utility" or "compact" tractor means something with a standard PTO and 3 point hitch. If your tiller is belt driven than you should be able to rig up a drive belt and mounting attachment hardware to another garden tractor for your tiller, if you've got a shaft driven tiller its most likely already set up for the standard PTO. Post back more info and we'll see what options you've got.

Hello Fred, Try to post some questions here...

....one of the members just restored an older Gilson...maybe he can give you some tips. At the very least someone might want to buy what's left of yours.

Hi, I've been trying to decide what to as as a selling price for our Sears Craftsman riding mower, comes with all the attachment carts, i.e. wagon, tiller....The pins are sheared and the belt we bought for the tractor from the Sears part store will not fit...too big of a job for amateur repair people. But want to get it a fair price for selling it and the attachments. Thanks, Lianne

I'll sell you a 25 year old Gilson riding garden tractor that runs great. The only problem is the mower deck leaves a strip about 2 inched wide in the middle of uncut grass. Seems some genious at gilson decided to have the mower deck have two normal size blades and one high speed six inch blade in the center. It cannot take the RPM's and the bearing blows out...

$500 and it's yours
