Grape Catsup

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I saw an answer on how to make home made tomato catsup. Does anyone out there know how to make Grape Catsup? My mom used to make it and put it in old root beer bottles. I recall putting it on almost all my food because I liked it so much.

John, if you go back to that thread on catsup, Nina said she got the recipe for grape catsup out of a book from the library on colonial times.

John: While looking for the recipe (I have it, somewhere), I found recipes for Apple Catsup, Cranberry Catsup, and one for Cucumber Catsup in a 1934 Household Searchlite Cookbook. Never fails to amaze me what our grandma's could make! I'll post the grape one shortly, Jan

John: Here is the one I have, and I can't give credit to the site I got it from, as I cut the recipe to fit a card, and removed the other info, so here goes:

Five cups pulp or juice, one cup brown sugar, one cup vinegar, 1 teaspoon each of black pepper, cloves cinnamon and salt. Boil half away. That's all there is, so I think it may be an old one, as there aren't a lot of instructions. Good luck! (Wish I could grow grapes here!) Jan
