Unique Public Art Project Invites Artists to Submit Proposals Arts Benefit All Coalition Alternative (ABACA), a partnership between Artists Space, Thread Waxing Space, Art in General, The Drawing Center, and Satellite Academy, an alternative public high school on the Lower East Side, invites submissions for a public art project to be featured June/July 2001 at Artists Space and throughout the Lower East Side and SoHo.

The concept for this public art project is the notion of In Between. In Between invites consideration of the many modes of transitions that one can identify in social, cultural, political configurations, in the geography of the urban landscape, or in formal considerations. The theme is intentionally open. We hope artists will develop new interpretations for the concept of In Between.

The public art exhibition will be curated by approximately 8 high school students from ABACA's Satellite Academy Curatorial Studies class, aged 16-20. Student curators will select artists to be in the project and organize all aspects of the project including developing interpretations of artists work, writing publicity materials, and developing exhibition themes.

Artists will be responsible for selecting their own site. The deadline for submissions is February 28th, 2001.

To be sent a copy of the Call for Proposals and submission guidelines, please call (212) 677-3591 and leave your mailing information and telephone number.

The ABACA program receives major support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Open Society Institute; the Empire State Partnership Initiative of NYSCA; New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), a state agency; and New York Foundation for the Arts.
