draft question (wood stove)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

my old defiant is working very well, thanks for everyones advice.

i recently added a T cleanout at the bottom of the chimney. in order to do this i had to add an extra curve in my black pipe; the black single wall now exits the top of the stove and makes a 90 degree turn after 10" or so, then a slight incline for 30" to a second 90 degree turn into the T and then the 90 made by the T before going into the triple wall chimney. my draft was great before this change (i had only two turns) but now the smoke occasionally backs up when the fire is low and i open the load door. would this third turn have that much effect on the draft? I'm figuring that this has to be it because the only thing that has changed is adding the T. i haven't added an in-line damper to the single wall pipe yet - will the damper help?

thanks

Response to draft question

Dave, I thinking that the addition of the "T" would make a difference. I assume that the slight incline you mentioned it sloping upwards and not downwards. I don't think the addition of a damper would help your problem. I wouldn't recommend more than two 90's. Hey, I could be wrong, I'm still looking for my stove.

Response to draft question

Actually, I can't see where the damper would do anything accept maybe make the draw a little worse. We have the same problem with ours, fire low and open load door, especially if the wind is low and it isn't so cold outside. You learn to get fast!!!

Response to draft question

I haven't read this thread, but I will. I'm responding b/c I didn't know if this was to be about a draft from a crack or something; stove- type of draft; the draft as it stands vis-a-vis military conscription; draft like one does in spinning; or draft as in types of beer!

See how many topics we can cover on a homesteading forum!!!!

Okay, just read it! I thought perhaps!
