Gondola or motorized Bosun's chair

String a pair of long cables across a river and make machines to ride on the cable, moving the team members forward and back above the river. Require the a driver and passenger for each trip

Motorized or human powered would work.

you mean a arial tram that sound good but there is a lot of work to get it right. for one you need to be balance correcly or it will flip, two you have to be light or it will never make it up the cable, three in order to get that much power to pull you need a gass motor and that make it to heavy, five how high do thing it will go before it will slow down and start slipping (remmeber this is a steel cable right and it will be on steel) once you solve those problems it shall be a good project

Yes an arial Tram, but one that only goes horizontally, no altitude changes required.

This makes it a much simpler and possible project to accomplish in 10 hours. Without having to climb up the wire, you can power it with a human and a bicycle chain.

Even then, balance will be critical... particularly during loading and unloading. :) However fixing that would take 15 minutes with the right design choices.

My problems are with the critical bit of the large pulley, and that it may be a boring build. I do like the idea of electic or human power being an idea, but then again we have the problem of finding enough 12V motors. Perhaps a human vs electric ground vehicle would be interesting.

i remember something i did with my lego mindstorms(hint i'm only 15) to prevent from fliping when loading i would take a second wheel/pully and place it under the main pulley so it ride on the cable. robert
