Saudi papers launch verbal attack on Clinton '... We only have bad memories of the Clinton era,' Saudi paper said

January 10, 2001, 02:03 AM RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabian newspapers on Tuesday launched a rare attack on US President Bill Clinton and one said Arabs and Muslims would only have bad memories of his eight years in office.

The broadsides came 10 days before Clinton leaves office and coincided with a last-minute push by his administration with new proposals for a peace deal between the Palestinians and Israel.

"Clinton wanted a prize at the end of his term ... Let the proposals leave with those leaving the White House...," said the daily Al-Watan in reference to Clinton’s peace initiative.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, is a strong regional ally of the United States.

But its heir apparent, Crown Prince Abdullah, has surprised observers since the start of a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation late in September by his unprecedented criticism of the United States for what Arabs see as its blind support for Israel.

"...We only have bad memories of the Clinton era," Al-Riyadh, another Saudi daily, said in an editorial.

"Clinton has no qualities of a successful man and has become a hostage surrounded by Israeli advisers, ambassadors and businessmen...that revealed the moral fabric of this leadership," it said.

"What concerns us in Clinton’s tenure is not his scandals or success but the net with which he tried to hunt and strangle every bird in the Arab sky," it said.

It said Clinton tried to "obliterate the history and culture of (the Arab) nation, kept quiet on crimes against Islamic sanctities" and as president of a big power lacked "political wisdom and logical behavior.

"Clinton is not a man who inspires trust among Arabs and Muslims...as the hatred and animosity of the United States has never been as high as it (has been) during his term," Al-Riyadh said.

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat told a Saudi Arabian newspaper that the US proposals failed to meet two main Palestinian demands -- sovereignty over Arab East Jerusalem and the Palestinian refugees` right to return.

Clinton’s plans would give the Palestinians sovereignty over the Gaza Strip and the "vast majority" of the West Bank but deny refugees and millions of their descendants the right to return to their original homes if those are located inside Israel.

The plan would also give Palestinians control of Arab areas in Jerusalem and offer a compromise on the city’s holy sites.

Bush won all three debates. I guess that makes him a pretty good bluffer.

If Al Gore could have kept any one of his changable faces on straight during the debates he would have been an even better bluffer. Thank God he couldn't. As it was, we all got a REAL GOOD look at what we would be in for if we had elected Batman's nemisis 'Two Face' into office before November.

With Gore's ever changing face and Klinton's mishandling of the Elian Gonzalez situation in Florida, Sore/Loserman were doomed!

10 days to go. I can't wait! :-)

How could Bush have won the debates when he lost the popular vote by half a mill and only won the electoral college by less than two hundred votes?

Alice, you're wasting your breath. "Ain't" is an idiot and rank misogynist and idiot who wants to send women back to the stone ages. Doesn't get it that the vast majority voted liberal (Gore & Nader) and that Gore will win the recount in Florida when it's completed in about 10 weeks. Ain't thinks that the Little Pretender has a "mandate". The real crybaby is GW, who wouldn't allow democracy to even work -- had to shut it down so he'd stop whining.

Ummm...HELLO! In case you didn't know it, Gore has recently officially conceeded the race.

Our next Prez will be George 'Winner' Bush!

Now 9 days to go! :-)
