Does anyone know how to keep native rats out of my vegetable garden without cruelty or chemicals?

try soaking soft rope or lg size yarn in a mixture finley powdered very hot pepper & fast drying car wax placing it around the perimeter of your garden area.{P.S.may not be affective on mexican rats they might like it }
