difference of EX and EZ speedlights

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Hi! I hope somebody could help me on this.

I have a 430ez speedlight for my old EOS 10. I am planning to buy the latest EOS30.

I would would like to know if I can fully use the new 30's features (flash-wise) with my old 430ez, if there's any. What's new with the ex that is not with the EZ?

Thank you in advance guys!

No. The 430EZ will only do what EZ series lights will do, and when mounted on a new body like the 30/Elan 7 you wont even get A-TTL metering, although that isn't much of a loss.

The EX Speedlites will use the newer (& much better) E-TTL metering scheme so more of your exposures will/should be accurate. They will allow high speed sync (FP Flash in Canon speak) with shutter speeds up to 1/4000 sec. They will also do Flash Exposure Lock (FEL). The 420EX and 550EX will also do wireless E-TTL multiflash metering if you have more than one of them.

The 430EZ will work on the 30 though. You'll get straight TTL metering without any fancy bells & whisles.
