Harboring an illegal alien is a violation of the law, regardless of "compassionate" intentions. What is next, Republicans bringing foreign terrorists into their homes and plotting attacks on the American people?

Bush Nazi Agenda, if you had been born in Mexico, how hard would you try to get to the USA, land of opportunity?

You damned right!

You would crawl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So shut your damned Nazi mouth!!!!!!!!

Bush Nazi hater,

If you are a Bush Nazi hater, why are you defending the Fuhrer's thugs?

Ever hear of a green card??? That is what you get if you come from Mexico and want a job asshole! You don't go hiding in some crooked law-breaking politician's house!

-- Bush Nazi hater hater (go.back.to.mexico@you.wetback), January 09, 2001.

Get over it, you phoney. Been to a fast-food restaurant lately? Hired (however indirectly) a landscape maintanance crew lately? Hired a house-cleaner lately?

Guess what? You have employed illegal aliens from Mexico, China, Haiti, etc. You couldn't support your lifestyle without this invisible labor.

-- Lars (larsguy@yahoo.com), January 09, 2001.

"Been to a fast-food restaurant lately? Hired (however indirectly) a landscape maintanance crew lately? Hired a house-cleaner lately?"

Yep, and they all had green cards. Businesses do not employee illegal aliens dimwit, it is in violation of the law. I don't know what kind of hellhole you live in, but where I live the law is the law.

You uppity righteous and moral Repubs are always preaching about enforcing the laws and being upstanding citizens. Now, when one of your own hypocrits is found in violation of these laws, all of a sudden it is the perfectly acceptable norm.

-- (the.hypocrisy@is.suffocating), January 09, 2001.

Whats the big deal, the woman was probaly a live in sex partner thas was working out some anxiety problems. You know it is not any different than the thousands of iileagles the American gov't gives sanctions to every year, but the must promise to get thier citizenship as soon as posible. I personally know an individual that was in the U.S. air force for 10 yrs. before he needed to get his citizenship papers, and that was because he was wanting to participate in the gulf war. He did get his citizenship and he went to war.

I think execution is a bit harsh, but she should not get the job.

-- Uncle Deedah (unkeed@yahoo.com), January 09, 2001.

Yes, this is the greatest threat to our republic since WW2. Yawn! Chavez should step aside like Zoe Baird, same thing. But who REALLY cares, other than a bunch of screaming monkeys.

Lars-

We got a maid after I got sick. She's employed through an agency. We pay the agency, not her, and the agency assumes the tax, OSHA, and other liabilities. Our maid is also from Guatemala, but she's here legally because her husband is a permanent resident. She doesn't have a green card, but she does have a valid work visa. I don't want to reward those who take advantage of illegal aliens.

Frankly, I find Chavez' story hard to believe. A woman with children invites a stranger to live in her home for two years on the word of a neighbor's maid? Chavez doesn't speak Spanish, and at the time, the woman didn't speak English (I saw an interview with her on GMA this AM, her English is pretty good). No way.

the.hypocracy:

FYI, there are lots, lots, lots of people living and working in the US illegally, without greencards or work visas. But hypocracy is rampant with this issue.

We just had a case in my metro area where a group of illegal immigrants were being made, by a major, major hotel chain, to work forced overtime. They tried to form a union to keep it under control. Bad move. The hotel chain picked that time to call the INS, out of, basically, spite. The chain was sued, lost the suit, the workers were awarded a little money, and then deported.

What does this tell us? Do you think that hotel chain didn't know beforehand that they were employing illegals? How could they not? They looked the other way when it suited their needs, as Chavez obviously did.

If Chavez were being appointed by Gore in some alternate universe, the Rush Limbaugh crowd would be wadding their muskets.

-- Bemused (and_amazed@you.people), January 09, 2001.

Tarz--

You're an honest guy. So am I of course. But "suffocating" truly thinks that there aren't hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens in this country? Sheeesh. Brian, do you have an opinion? (Greens know all about this kind of thing)

Personally, I don't care if Chavez gets the job. There are plenty of other Conservative candidates that Bush can nominate. I like her spunk but she is a bit of a phony Latina--she can't even speak Spanish. Her mother was Anglo. Her husband is non-Hispanic.

To me, the whole issue is a yawn. The Dems are desparate for a victoty. So let them have their pound of flesh. Hang Linda Chavez! Hang her on the village green. Hang her till she poops her pants. Kill, kill, kill!

-- Lars (larsguy@yahoo.com), January 09, 2001.

"If Chavez were being appointed by Gore in some alternate universe, the Rush Limbaugh crowd would be wadding their muskets. "

Yep, instead, the Al Sharpton crowd are wadding their muskets. Same old same old. 'Can't we all just get along'. 'I need to get back to the business of the people'. ha ha ha - It starts all over again. I guess the hyprocrisy will always swing in both directions.

-- mbo (rfp@mail.com), January 09, 2001.

Lars-

I think Linda Chavez shouldn't not get this job. How can you expect her to uphold the law if she won't follow it?

Also, I think your criticism of her ethnicity is a low blow. Lots of American Hispanics were not taught to speak Spanish by their families due to a certain amount of shame and a desire to integrate with American culture. Moreover, there are plenty of people who are of mixed race in this country who identify with both cultures rather than one or the other.

Weird. I'm in the position of defending a woman I dislike. Strange days, eh?

-- Tarzan the Ape Man (tarzan@swingingthroughthejunglewithouta.net), January 09, 2001.

I was wrong to say "there are hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens in this country". Actually there are millions.

The real issue here is not Ms Chavez-Gerstner. IMO she is expendable, a political pawn. The real issue is illegal immigration to the US. How do we feel about it? As usual, there are strange bedfellows. Opposed to a liberal (small L) immigration policy are labor unions, the Greens (I betcha) and nativist, protectionist types like Pat Buchanon. In favor of a liberal immigration policy (I betcha) Libertarians (I betcha) who see this as a free-market issue. Remember Prof Julian Simon?

Unc, Eve, Brian please correct me if I missrepresent any of you.

Here is a link to a March 18, 1999 Hearing before the House subcommittee on Immigration and Claims. Caveat, the chairman is Lamar Smith, TX (R). I'm pretty sure this guy is not the Lamar Smith who is running back for the Miami Dolphins.

HOUSE OF REPS HEARINGS ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

-- Lars (larsguy@yahoo.com), January 09, 2001.

Lars,

Bush is opposed to illegal immigration, so it would not be appropriate for him to appoint a cabinet member who harbors an illegal alien in her own home. Simple as that. If she has a conscience, she will step back and allow a person of integrity to take the job.

-- (right@is.right), January 09, 2001.

If Chavez truly has done something illegal then by all means let's dump her. But if this is just a red-herring to deny her the job because she is a Conservative, then why bother? Bush will just appoint another Conservative.

-- Lars (larsguy@yahoo.com), January 09, 2001.

While I agree with the Libertarian position on immigration, I also have to agree that harboring an illegal alien has been illegal in the US for quite some time. Therefore, Chavez broke the law. Moreover, it appears she may have had an employer relationship with the person in question (who's now a legal resident). If so, she should be subject to the same fines and penalties as any other indvidual in that situation.

-- Tarzan the Ape Man (tarzan@swingingthroughthejunglewithouta.net), January 09, 2001.

I agree on the illegal alien thing but not on the "employer relationship" thing. If it's proven that she knew she was here illegally, then yes Chavez broke the law and shouldn't be appointed. However, this is no evidence that she was her employer.

There's nothing illegal about befriending someone and offering help. To reciprocate for this kindness, she did a few favors. Big deal! Gawd, if someone accused me of having an employer relationship with every person I helped, I'd owe the IRS big bucks. Nothing wrong with a good deed and another good deed in return. Oh I forgot, republicans can't show compassion because they are money grubbing people.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), January 09, 2001.

It's not about compassion, it's about someone cleaning your house, walking your dog, babysitting your children, and fixing your meals for two years while you give them money at regular intervals. You make it sound like this woman picked up Chavez' dry cleaning once and got a basket of muffins in return.

-- Tarzan the Ape Man (tarzan@swingignthroughthejunglewithouta.net), January 09, 2001.

"republicans can't show compassion because they are money grubbing people."

Yes, this is very sad, but unfortunately true. It's obvious that there wasn't a shred of compassion in Chavez, she was merely looking for a way to get a house maid for well below the minimum wage, so she cheated the system. Typical Republican behavior.

-- (glad@you.agree), January 09, 2001.

Tar, obviously you've never taken anyone into your home. I have and that's what happens, people begin helping people. Wow, there's something definitely illegal about that.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), January 09, 2001.

Hawk, blow it out your ear.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), January 09, 2001.

There is nothing illegal about taking someone into your home unless that person is a criminal. Under current laws, illegal aliens are criminals (hence the term "illegal").

I think it is foolish in the extreme to welcome a stranger into your home for two years, especially when the only thing you know about them comes from a five minute conversation with a neighbor's employee, particularly when you have children who will be home alone with the stranger and especially when you don't even speak the same language. I am all for helping people but I will not compromise my safety or the safety of my family. If you are willing to take that risk, then by all means, you're welcome to it. But don't take advantage of an illegal alien and call it charity.

-- Tarzan the Ape Man (tarzan@swingingthroughthejunglewithouta.net), January 09, 2001.

Christine Todd Whitman also employed illegal aliens in 1993.

http://www.newsday.com/coverage/current/news/tuesday/nd2918.htm

Certainly these people know better--just as Zoe Baird did.

-- Pam (Pam@j.o.e), January 09, 2001.

Zoe Baird was a Democrat. I guess that makes "Hawk" as big a hypocrite as any of the money-grubbing Repbulicans.

-- mbo (rfp@mail.com), January 10, 2001.

Or maybe it is an example of 'bi-partisanship'.

-- Pam (Pam@j.o.e), January 10, 2001.

No longer employable in politics, Linda will appear nightly at the artistic dance venue "Babes" in East LA. Her stage name will be Cha-Cha. Lap dances start at $25.00

-- (nemesis@awol.com), January 10, 2001.

"Zoe Baird was a Democrat."

Yes, and she was forced to withdraw for doing the same thing that Chavez is doing. Except she didn't LIE about it. Republicans yelled and screamed until Baird was forced to withdraw. Among those yelling the loudest was one LINDA CHAVEZ, a first class HYPOCRITE, who at that time was doing exactly the same thing that she blasted Baird for. She never thought Democrats would remember that far back, or find out that she was the epitome of a HYPOCRITE. Boy was she WRONG!

What comes around, goes around. :-) ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!

What comes around, goes around.

THis comment is very telling, "But don't take advantage of an illegal alien and call it charity." It shows how you view the situation. Obviously I don't view it this way. As I posted before (illegal issue aside), welcoming someone in need into your home is a very charitable deed and should be appauled. Truth be told, if Chavez had filed this under an employee relationship, she could have saved big bucks on her tax return. That is, it would have benefited Chavez and not the immigrant.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), January 11, 2001.

Maria-

If she had claimed this woman on her taxes, she would have had to use a valid SSN just as your employer uses your SSN to report your earnings. When you are given a work visa, you are given an SSN for tax purposes (technically, it's a TIN, or Taxpayer Identification Number but it's the same thing). Since this woman was illegal and didn't have a valid SSN, Chavez couldn't have declared her without incurring penalities, fines, and a healthy audit. Chavez stood more to lose by declaring her than by not declaring her, so this is no proof that Chavez was performing an act of charity.

-- Tarzan the Ape Man (tarzan@swingingthroughthejunglewithouta.net), January 11, 2001.

"As I posted before (illegal issue aside),"

Oh, that's right, I forgot. Laws do not apply to the sanctimonious Republican hypocrites, only liberals.

"welcoming someone in need into your home is a very charitable deed and should be appauled."

You're right, I am appauled.
