What is the ideal African & Toulouse geese incubation temperatures?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have two african geese and two toulouse geese. To the best of my observation skills, I believe that the africans are both ganders and the toulouse both females. When the geese were around 7 months old, I found a small clutch of eggs, being late in the season, I left them for nature to deal with. However, I would like to incubate their eggs this year if it is possible for the two kinds of geese to successfully mate. I don't know if it is possiblble, but if it is I would like to know what conditions are needed to do so? I've hatched chickens and turkeys in the past and have an incubator. I also have two drake blue sweedish ducks, and two hens. One hen being a mallard, and the other a kaki cambell. Is is possible for them to breed as well? If so, please help.

Hi Brian: I have hatched chicken, ducks, turkeys and geese, all in the incubator at the same time. I wet my hands and sprinkle the duck and goose eggs. I frequently have ducks cross breed- it gives you a very interesting flock. You got me thinking about firing up the incubator. It has been a while since I did that.

Brian,

I have and African grey gander and a toulouse goose. They hatched 5 very large, very loud goslings. I don't incubate, I let mom hatch them herself. They are wonderful parents, even fighting off a pig that got out of his pen.

The goose stayed on her nest until 4 of the eggs hatched. When she left the fifth egg, I put it under a hen that was setting at the time. The next day, the hen had left it as well. I thought they must know something I didn't so I picked it up to throw it away. It was peeping! I brought it into the house and the kids watched it come out of it's shell. We kept it in untill it could waddle fast enough to keep up with mama then returned it to her with no problems. Life is good!

Brian, Yes, different breeds of geese can mate sucessfully and as can different breeds of ducks. The ofspring crosses may be interesting and of course may not breed true to type. Muscovy ducks can cross with other domestic ducks but the offspring are infertile and called mule ducks or hinnys (if I remember correctly). The suggested settings based on my Sportsman 1202 incubator for ducks/geese is: Temp 99 to 99.5 degrees, Incubation period is 28 days, humidity 86%, final day of rotation is day 25 and the humidity should be raised to 90-94% for the final three days of incubation.
