CARSON Wednesday, January 3, 2001 5:02 AM Y2K glitch sends jail back in time By Teri Vance, Appeal Staff Writer

The Y2K bug did not die with 2000.

As 2001 rolled in, some computers in the Carson City Sheriff's Department registered the date as Jan. 1, 1901.

"There was a bug in one bunch of programs," said Bill Naylor, communications director for Carson City. "As far as we know, they were the only ones affected."

Naylor said the glitch, which was found in computers in the jail, dispatch and records department, was detected early in the weekend and was corrected by Tuesday morning.

"It's all fixed," Naylor said.

Laura Cadot, communications director for dispatch, said the mistaken date was a nuisance but not a major setback.

Cadot said the department had no trouble calling up information on the computer but that the logs could not be printed because the date wouldn't process.

"For us, it just meant that the day's activities wouldn't print out," she said. "Our hard copies are working now."

Chief Deputy Scott Burau said the sheriff's department was able to carry out its primary duties despite the malfunction.

"Yes, we experienced computer problems," he said. "It did not in any way affect our ability to dispatch emergency services."
