need a self-feeder for pigs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I cannot find this feeder, tho I keep seeing them on farms all over the place! The only place that DID make them has stopped. I am looking for a very basic hog feeder. It looks like a grain bin, but at the bottom there is a platform with doors so the pigs can lift them to eat at their leisure. The feeder holds about 40 bushels, I guess. Anyone know where I can find one of these feeders?

Shannon, I made one out of wood from plans I got from the County Extention. It was only for 4 pigs but I guess you could expand it or make a couple. It worked great. Only deal, I don't know how to send things so you'll have to send your address to my e-mail so I can snail mail it to you if you want.

Hi Shannon, I made one from plywood. It's shaped just like a metal rabbit feeder (the kind that hangs in the cages) only big and on legs. It holds about 700 pounds of feed, loads from the top while standing in the back of a pickup-very handy. The floor is sloped so the feed slides down to the tray . It has a hinged lid with an overhang that slopes away from the tray. I don't have plans, the feed store owner told me how he built his. Peg

Put a wanted ad in the local paper. Lots of small farms had these when they use to run hogs. Chances are you might find a good one to haul off at a nominal cost.

Shannon, Did you get the plans I tried to send through the computer? If not, let me know so I can send them snail mail. (I'm not too good with this computer) Let me know either way, please.
