Depends on what you want out of it. The XS was discontinued a few years ago - guessing you bought at BestBuy or WalMart, who both still push them. You can get a good used one for half that much, but that said, I bought one new four years ago for about $280. Subsequently bought an A2, and use the XS as a backup. Good starter body, but $300 seems awful high for a discontinued model...

Hi, I recently purchased a REBEL XS body for $55 used. It was sold so low since the owner said it drains the batteries very fast (tested it and it drained overnight) so what I have done is to purchase a battery pack (BP-8 goes for less than $30) and used rechargable Ni-Cads on it. This solves my problems since I simply re-charge the batteries when they drain and AA ni-cads are a lot cheaper than the standard batteries that come with the XS. Overall, the XS has a lot of features found on the later cameras. Granted the newer models have a bit more features but the features found on the XS are what I would conisder to be practical. I love my XS and I find it to be a great camera with all the features I need as an intermediate level photographer. I also own other Canon EOS cameras and they have almost the same features( give or take a few) as the XS but the overall standard features are the same and they'r more than I could ask for.
