recipies (for wood cookstove)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We have just installed our first wood cookstove. I really like but would like to get more recipies. I have cooked all that I cooked on my electric stove but I am eager to do more on my woodstove. I am especially interested in food that uses my own canned and frozen meats and vegetables. Thanks, Joanie

The only thing I do not do on the wood stove is pasta or rice.

Joanie---there is an art to real cooking on a wood stove----I learned by trail & error---you can cook anything on your wood stove you did on the electric range---once you get the nack of moveing the things around on top of your stove --as the same as turning your electric burner down. I love the warming oven to keep things warm while other things finish cooking. Once you get the art mastered SHARE IT---We sell all types of wood stoves----& woodburning cook stoves---it is becomming a lost art/to be able to cook on one!!!!! Like tatting, or basket makeing, etc.---if we want to keep this "simple way of life" going we need to be ready to pass it on! I ask anyone I teach how/ to pass it on!!!! Don't let it die!!! My Brother who still has a team of horses has taught soooo many people how to harness a team & repair harness & the things we take for granted!! We need to pass those things on & not let them become a lost art!!! Happy cooking---trail & error is the best way to find your own art at cooking on your own stove! I have cooked on many a wood stove & they all have there own personality. Kind of like who in your family can always start the old farm truck. Sonda in Ks.

Dear Joanie,

I too have cooked on a wood cookstove and loved every minute of it. Mine even had 3 concentric rings over the firebox so I could set a wok in it. I cooked everything on the stove and in the oven except for angel food cake. One year I even cooked down the sap from the few maple trees we tapped (an experiment).

I loved the water resevior and the warming ovens were great.

I did most of my canning on that stove too.

We moved back to the city when my youngest was born but are getting ready to go back to the country. I can not wait. I hope I am lucky enough to find another cookstove.

Anyway...do not be afraid to cook anything on the stove. Have you noticed how much better the foods taste than from either an electric or gas stove? You can simmer sauces, stews and the like on the area away from the firebox and not worry about burning.

Also, the type of wood you use will had a flavor to your food. Wonderful!.

Good luck.

Cordy
