Generator trips off line

A generator is to blame for leaving nearly 2,000 Hawaii Electric Light Company customers in the dark Thursday afternoon, HELCO officials said.

Officials said Hamakua Energy Partner's (HEP) generator unexpectedly tripped off line at 1:58 p.m. affecting 1,967 customers in the areas of Kealia, South Kona, along Railroad Avenue and Kanoelehua Avenue including Prince Kuhio Plaza, Waiakea Center and Puainako Town Center.

"As a result of this sudden loss of generation, all of the affected customers were turned off automatically to protect the rest of the system," spokesman Miles Nagato said. "Additional generation was started and service to all customers was restored three minutes later at 2:01 p.m."

The cause of the outage is under investigation.
