Does anyone know what causes the canon AE-1 SLR shutter curtain to malfunction (does not open and seems to shoot at one speed ? When speedlite 133a flash is used it fails consistently.

In this day and age where people needlessly trade in their camera every 6 months to a year... it might be time to consider that you have simply used your camera to its maximum potential.

Factor in the money spent and the longevity... and you no doubt got your money's worth. Repairs might not be financially viable, if possible at all. If you are locked into FD lenses, you might try to locate a T90 or F1.

Good Luck.

At a minimum, it probably needs a good CLA. At a maximum, it is in bad shape. Hard to tell via text.

I suggest you take it to a repair shop or two, and see what they say. If it just a CLA, it is probably worth doing. You can buy another one for about the price of a good CLA, but it might need the same service.

Or, as mentioned in another post, look into other Canon FD cameras. The T90 is awesome (so much so I bought 2). A-1s are also readily available.

As for where to send it, there is a guy who advertises by eBay auctions, and is mentioned on the Canon FD forum on LUSENET (www.greenspun.com), Karl Aimo. I have heard good things about his work, and he is not expensive.

I take most of my repairs to Strauss in Washington, DC. Not the cheapest, but they do EXCELLENT work.

I have an almost unused Canon AE1 with brand new wide angle and Sigma zoom lenses if any one is interested in purchasing.
