Canon has this document copyrited and they don't make it available on the internet. No one else can either. At least not legally. Canon will sell you one though.

I agree about the legality, but you can buy a photocopied manual at http://manuals2go.com/1a.htm for $6.99. They advertise on EBay all the time and have a huge selection of manuals, I'm thinking that if the manufacturers care they would have done something by now.

I also see that they have real manuals for $25 at http://www.craigcamera.com/ib_canon.htm

The photocopied manuals are violating Canon's copyright; Canon either is unaware, or the infraction is (as yet) too small to prosecute. The $25 manuals are for idiots who will pay that much, and to be legal, must meet licensing requirements Canon sets.

Do the right thing - go to Canon's site, find the right number, and order a manual from them. If you can provide proof of original ownership, they may elect to replace the manual for free...

I complained to Canon UK about the fact that they don't supply the manuals in PDF format on the web. I pointed out that the only people interested are people who have bought or who are considering buying Canon products. I also pointed out that it wasn't a very good way to treat existing or potential customers. There response was that they agreed with me and were looking into it but as that was over 6 months ago I don't suppose it is going to happen. I still only have a German manual for my 380EX flash but as it only has two switches, a button and a light I have managed to work out its operation :-).

I think we need to force our point that the companies should make their manuals availaible for downloads on their websites free of charge. I mean making money is okay but robbing people is quite another thing which Canon is trying to do by charging so exorbitantly for something as lowly as a manual. Don't we already spend enough money to buy Cameras and lenses. I have just written a mail to Canon that if they don't provide the manuals of their products in PDF format soon on their site, I won't buy a Caonon product ever again. Its time that some more people did the same

The world is a crazy place. I thought the same as those above -- that the photocopies that you can buy on Ebay must be illegal -- I figured that Canon must not have caught on yet. But I JUST called Canon to ask how much a manual would be. Guess what? All they sell is a photocopy of the original -- for $7.00. So apparently they don't care who else makes money off of it -- because who's to say what photocopy was legally purchased from Canon and what photocopy wasn't. And geez -- $7.00. For photocopies. How ridiculous is that? They make the damn copiers and toner cartidges. It's probably costing them 10 cents an hour in Taiwan to make the photocopier and the toner. Their big expense is in paying someone to make the first set of copies -- after that, I'm sure that their machine takes care of the rest. My goodness! I wholeheartedly agree with the above posts -- Canon ought to provide their manuals in PDF format on the website for free -- it costs them nothing to post a manual that they surely already have in PDF format. And really -- it's just customer service. I have a Rebel 2000. I have no interest in a Nikon N65 manual or a Pentax ZX-7 manual. It's not like there are going to be millions of people out there downloading their manual -- it's going to be current customers or people interested in becoming customers. It's only to their advantage. I'm glad I bought my camera used -- Canon isn't getting any of my money as long as they continue along these lines.

Feeling your pain, Nicholas

By looking at Canon's stupid policy to rob money from everywhere, I change my mind to buy Canon. Now onwards I'll never go for any Canon product. Canon people are so stupid and foolish. Lots of manuals are available for free even of companies bigger then Canon. Even so may softwares are also available on the net for the free of charge and this Canon people keeps on robing. I'll go for any other camera rather to buy a Canon one.

Now there's a good example of sheer irrationality.

At $7 a manual, it's doubtful that Canon is making any money off of manuals. Definantly not robbing anyone. Remember, it's not Canon who lost the manual. =) Should they also supply you with any parts or accessories that you happen to lose?

Second, what other camera manufacturers make manuals available online? Not that I looked super hard, but I don't see any manuals on Sigma's, Nikon's, or Hasselblad's sites.

Third, I've yet to see a camera manual that's actually useful.

I've downloaded manuals from the Olympus site fot my OM4 - no problem. Seems a shame that Canon can't be as helpful By the way I also need one for a 2nd hand EOS 50E I've just purchased
