Anybody ever make a great snowman or sculpture? I saw a Snoopy sculpture many years ago. It must have been close to 15 feet high, it was awesome. Any stories connected to a snowman, memories?

HI! Up here in north Idaho in the small town of Sandpoint, we have a Winter Carnival and everyone gets involved in making snow sculptures. It's amazing some of the things that can be done!

If I can get my scanner to work, I'll d/l or u/l (whichever) pictures from the newspaper, if you want. However, this event doesn't happen until January.. or........ you could just come on up and see it for yourself!!

Sounds good Cher. One of the colleges near here has a snow carnival also and it is so much fun to see what they have done.

Well, when I was a kid, it wasn't winter without a few snowmen and snowladies and a snowfort (that was at school -- everyone worked on it), and sometimes there would be a snow castle or ice castle put up by the firemen or the baseball team. It seems that the snow isn't as wet as it was when I was a kid. Not so good for packing into sculptures -- but certainly easier on the back for shoveling!

The most memorable snow sculpture for me was one I made all by myself, about 15 years ago (I was in my 30's but I had a protracted childhood!). The snow was just right for packing. I got very cold and wet, but when I was done, I had a great cat (lying on its side with its head up) -- house cat, but about the size of a big lion. I think I used pinecones for the eyes.

Lots of people went by slowly while I was building it -- guess they never saw a woman of (supposedly) mature age acting like a kid. The rest of the winter, people would stop and stare at it. I thought they were admiring my work, but maybe they were just trying to decide what it was!

We always would make snow angels -- everyone know about them? You find a stretch of undisturbed powdery snow, then fall over backwards into it. When you are lying flat on the snow, you fan your legs and arms out (like you were doing jumping jacks). The legs make the angel's skirt and the arms make the wings. It helps to have a friend or sibling to pull you up out of it so you don't ruin it.

Almost every year, the firemen would flood a spot for us to ice skate. There was a "hollow" right next to the school yard, with one side cleared and we could go sliding right there. We lived within a block of school, so we could go over there sliding at night (early evening really) sometimes too. There was also a small ski hill just outside of town, so if we had the funds, we could go skiing too. When I was a teenager, the first wave of snowmobiles came out and became popular. I used to ride on them some, but really, they mostly ruined winter activities. You can scarcely go outside in my home town without the snarl of snowmobiles intruding on the peace and quiet and, often, endangering your life. Phooey.
