Computer crash cancels Mesaba-Northwest flights leaving Minneapolis

The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (December 22, 2000 11:10 a.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) -

A computer outage Thursday forced the cancellation of about 170 Northwest Airlink flights operated by Mesaba Airlines.

The outage prevented flights from departing for about three hours Thursday afternoon, Mesaba spokeswoman Ann Barkelew said. The computer system started coming back online about 5:15 p.m. and flights were being dispatched again, she said.

Mesaba planned to fly a full schedule of about 850 Northwest Airlink flights Friday, she said.

Barkelew said she didn't have figures on how many passengers were affected, but noted that Mesaba's planes carry either 34 or 69 passengers.

She said the airline worked closely with Northwest Airlines to make sure the inconvenienced passengers were accommodated, and she didn't think any would be stranded overnight.

"Customers were unhappy but seemed to understand," Barkelew said.

Mesaba serves 104 cities in 28 states and Canada from Minneapolis-St. Paul, Detroit Metro and Memphis International Airport.
