What Three Looks - The Time Machine

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Remember the ending of The Time Machine where the main character returned to the past briefly, then took three books back to the future with him. What three books would you have chosen?

Obviously I shouldn't do my own proofreading. Title should have been What Three Books.

"How to survive off the land" "Standards book of herbs and plants" "$50 or less underground houses"

Of course I'd also take my collection of CountrySide Magazines"

The Bible, copy of the Declaration of Independance and Bill of Rights (not strictly a book) and probably some sort of good cookbook.

Pretty Freudian, huh?

Hey Ken! HAHAHA! I'm not the ONLY one who mess's up! That makes me feel good to find that I'm in good company!! 1. My LARGE PRINT BIBLE---KJV.

2. Foxfire series.[I know you said 'book'.]

3. Constitution

Matt. 24:44

Ken, I like the original idea. I will just take three "lookers".

Encyclopedia of Country Living, The Medical Advisor (Time/Life) - The Complete Guide to Alternative and Conventional Treatments, and Reader's Digest Back to Basics.

-- Soni (thomkilroy@hotmail.com), December 19, 2000.

I would have to say...Walden, the bible, and 2001: A space odessey. Hows that for diversity?

-- Joe (Threearrs@AOL.com), December 19, 2000.

Only 3?...The Bible, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Connetticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.

-- Doreen (animalwaitress@excite.com), December 19, 2000.

Wait a second, I'm confused. I read it to mean what 3 books would we like to retrieve from the past to take into the future (actually, our present) with us. Is that not what you meant? Help! 'Splain it please!

Joy:

This was in the context of The Time Machine novel and movie. He went in the future and helped established a new world. Came back to let friends know where he had been and went back, taking three books with him. Give these circumstances, what three current books should he take into this future society?

Is this some kind of torture, asking homesteaders to pick only 3 books? Well, I'd take the Bible, and since Hoot's taking the Foxfire series, and the Constitution, and Soni's taking the Encyclopedia... and other's are taking..., I guess I'll take The Book of Virtues/The Moral Compass(set of 2).

Hey Ken, could I bind CS and take it as my books? It has been my standby and dreams since I found it so long ago. All the wisdom of homesteading is or will be covered, and aside from being a practical "how to" guide it is also entertaining and gives the "warm fuzzies" each time they are read. A big tip 'o the hat to all the folks out there writing to share their successes/failures and furthering a more peaceful, kinder gentler lifestyle.
