Can anyone advise me about telescopes? My husband is really interested in getting one. I was going to get him one for Christmas but not good timing... What should I look for in one and what's a good price? Thanks for you help.

My only experience with a telescope is as a teenager. Most practical use for it was when Becky Miller forgot to close her bedroom curtains.

Surf over to www.telescope.com & order a catalog. Even if you don't buy from them, their catalog is pretty good on information.

What to buy ? Really depends on how the scope is to be used. I've got a 3.5" reflector that I use occasionally (present from last Christmas) but I'd prefer something a little more portable.

If you get enough information on what you want, head over to ebay and search for 'telescope' and see what happens. A lot of new equipment and lots of used. I think folks get a telescope, play a while, and then lose interest. It's either cold, or you're fighting bugs, or there is too much light around to enjoy the experience.

Doesn't really answer your question, just my .02 cents worth.

If just getting started, check yard sales and flea markets first. I have purchased 2 very good models for $10 ea at yard sales that we use for star gazing. Hobby and camera shops carry used equipment also.

I've got a nice-sized reflector on a stand. We've been able to see the horsehead nebula and many other fantastic sights. BUT - it's a pain to get in and out of the house, since it's attached to its tripod. If I ever get another, I'll look for something more portable, or one that comes with a viewing tower! :)

I've got a 4 1/2" reflector.[My dad found it at auction for $40!.] [Just start praying and checking out the ads etc...]

My dad[into photography]is looking to buy something that he can hook up to my telescope so he can snap some photos when he visits.
