Any Grangers Out There

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My hubby and I just got back from our Grange Christmas Party. There were about 40 people there aged from 5 months to 95 years. We enjoy our Grange so much. We have a potluck dinner once a month and a game nite once a month, with a dessert. We keep up on legislation concerning farming, such as breeching our dams, pesticides, foreign competion ect. The wonderful people in the Grange are like family. If you are lucky enough to have a Grange in your area join it.

Hi Martha! I always wondered who belonged to granges and what they were for. I might look into the local one up the road. The only time I ever see anyone there is for the Menonites' Sunday meetings, though.

I like to think of this forum as a "cyber-grange".

: Any Grangers Out There :

Oh Yes, Most folks, homesteaders, don't even know they are grangers!

A grange is: A farm, with its dwelling-house and belongings.

And then there is: [U.S.A.] The Grange, A local branch of the association of farmers called "Patrons of Husbandry"

As in all things some rumors will always be stated as fact by the unknowing curious. This is good for a govenment which needs and thrives on a public of the unlearned. Granger is Good!

A great time for families and all us kids was the "Grangers Picnic" at Williams Groove, PA.

Hi Martha,

Our local grange just closed and the building is for sale. Sad. We used to have wonderful dinners there for the holidays, and the grange won so many prizes at the fairs.

We have checked out another grange about 10 miles from here. Nice folks. They have a Sunday roast beef dinner which is popular, too.

Glad you have an active grange!

Not far from my home is a road called "The Grange Hall Road." we used to have one years ago. I liked the idea and that is the reason I call the weekly coulmn I write "The Organic Grange" I wished we still had ours and I agree this board is a cyber-grange

Dear Martha,

I know this is a long addy site but it is only my fault for listing it. For all who homeschool and are wondering about The Grangers; go to this site and you just may find and support the assoc.

And Yes Grant, in many ways this forum is a cyber-grangers Meeting Hall.

OOPS!!

I left out this addy. http://www.nationalgrange.org/

Sorry, JR

Growing up in North Dakota and living mostly in Arizona I have never really heard of the Grange before. I vaguely thought it was some kind of labor union organization for farmers. Still not too sure of its origins. I looked at the site and do have a question. Why only 37 states? It appears some of the most rural states, mostly small populations also, do not have a Grange. Is the organization in decline like a lot of rural things nowadays?

Dear JLS When the grange farmers took on the railroads and made the U.S. Goverment give the country Rural Free Delivery mail. Worked hard for woman's voting rights, they have been the butt of bad mouthing ever since.

Only 37 states? The south could not trust a yankee is what I understand. Any way, here is the site for an in-depth study. JR put too much on his Addy

The above is a very index site of information.

In a lot of ways its homesteaders of America just doing the right thing!
