Tricks and Traps of Gain with XL1

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Shooting DV Films : One Thread

I'm shooting a feature - as an experiment - with a CanonXL1-Pal. I would love to know some of the tricks and traps of using gain. Should I leave it at zero and adjust with lights? Is auto too much of a wash resulting more of a video look with less color saturation? My biggest concerns are in low-light situations.

Thanks,

Jerry

Are you planning to transfer to 35mm?

Try solving low-light situations with the light and leave the gain at zero. This is the basic setup and offers you the best picture. Using gain toughes the picture quality as it's an artificial trick.
